The missing may be up to 191. One comment was that the condo was a mixture of live there all year long and people who are only there temporarily.

That may explain why the number of missing is to wonky.

Also the "recovered" includes all those from the still standing part of the building and doesn't mean they were found in the wreckage and pancaked building.

Edit: you knew this was coming, the first lawsuit filed electronically

The story of the boy pulled from the debris
How a man walking his dog heard the boy's screams for help and how they got him out. He said he was ten years old, his family says he's 15.
Kid is so lucky to be alive. His Mother in the same apartment remains missing.

I thought he looked a little big to be 10 in the videos... but regardless it's amazing that anyone in the collapsed portion survived.

5 inches is alot of settlement, and it would likely be noticeable from cracks in walls, windows and doors that bind up, uneven floors, etc.

But I doubt it would cause this type of failure

This. But why would it all crash down almost like a perfectly planned demolition? I mean a damned professional explosive expert may not be able to bring it down that well. That's what I don't understand? I can get some settlement causing a portion of the building to collapse, but almost the entire thing perfectly? Something seriously fricked up went on.

I'm struggling to understand how a 40 year old building suddenly collapses without MASSIVE warning signs of structural issues.

I would not want that job, I'd have nightmares seeing what they will be uncovering.

A survivor story from ABC News:
quote:

Paolo Longobardi, who lives in the Champlain Towers South with his wife and two children, said he also awoke to loud noises and saw part of the building collapse. He and his wife got the kids from their beds and ran for their lives.

"We said, 'We have to run, don't take anything,'" Longobardi recalled during an interview Friday on "GMA" with ABC News' T.J. Holmes.

But the staircase directly outside their unit was collapsing, he said, so they had to find another one.

"We decided to run to the other side of the building, the north side of the building, where there is another staircase," he said. "While we're running, we're thinking, we don't know what's going on."

Longobardi, who is a civil engineer, said they found a staircase that was completely intact and he quickly checked for cracks or other signs of damage before they used it to escape. Although he and his family are safe, Longobardi said they are all "shocked."

"It's a tremendous tragedy," he said, after taking a moment to collect himself. "We're lucky to be here."

I agree. I wouldn't try to start some crazy conspiracy stories, but it is extremely puzzling. If a new building collapsed like that, you could probably find architecture mistakes or construction mistakes.
But this building has been around for years.
I still think there was some type of renovations going on that isn't being owned up to at the moment.

Because it didn't. That was a planned demo.

At first the statement was the only renovations were roof work. This a.m. I read a mention there also something being done to concrete.

I will admit to joining the folks here (who probably also watch controlled demolitions on the net) who wondered ???controlled demolition when they saw the first collapse followed by the second part (eastern end) pancake on itself.

Once we have a list of the deceased I have little doubt that people will start playing "Six Degrees of Soros" with it.

IDK, though. I think it's more likely we'll start hearing stories of cracks, spalling, rusted rebar, etc. pretty quickly.
