My dog was bitten on the face by a snake last night. What can I give her?
I gave her Benadryl SQ last night and swelling appears stable. I have acccess to solumedrol 125mg, can I give her some of that? She’s 50lbs.
Thanks for any help, I just really can’t afford a large emergency vet bill right now.

Not trying to be captain obvious here, but what kind of snake matters

Just put your dog in the car and drive around for a few minutes. You'll find a guy with a "vet out of work" or "homeless vet"in no time.

If venomous, take the dog for anti venom

At night…Copperhead?
How swollen is the bite site?
Copperheads will sometimes give a “dry bite.” Other times, there isn’t as much venom. A full bite can do some damage though (even deadly).

There are threads on the Outdoor Board about snake bit dogs. Those guys know what to do.

I had a 20 lb Beagle get bitten by a Copperhead on side of muzzle.2days later she was over it.
If it was a rattlesnake your dog would likely be dead by now.

Fyi no vet is gonna give advice and risk losing their license.

50# dog should be fine. We had a dog last year take strike to the face by a cottonmouth and then she went ahead and killed it. She swoll up on one side of her face and slobbered a bunch. But she was fine the next day.

Dogs handle venomous snakebites better than humans. If she seems fine, she probably is. If she is in distress, get her to an emergency animal clinic.

If the swelling affects the nasal passages it could compromise the dog’s breathing. You also run the risk of infection all of which will cost more later.

I don’t know what kind of snake. She was running in the woods about dusk, I heard her barking at something, she later came back and in about 45 min li noticed that under her mouth had swollen. No blood, etc.

Your dog sounds like it will be fine... but my dog took a 5-6 footer to the dome, right behind his eye. Multiple vials of anti venin, almost needed a blood transfusion. If it was poisonous, it doesn't really matter copperhead, moccasin, or rattler... since the anti venin is the same for all pit vipers here.

My dad had a Jack Russell that basically became immune to snake bites. He loves to go off in the woods behind the house and bring back his trophies and drop them on the porch.
He would drag up rattlesnakes that had to weigh atleast twice as much as he did

I had a cat when I was a kid that was always getting bit by snakes and bringing dead ones home. She would bring everything from rat snakes to cotton mouths home.
Sometimes it would swell up at worst, generally though she had no effects at all.
Eventually one day she got hit by a car and died.
