OP is right and has a point.

Without at least those childless hipsters and millennial moving in, New Orleans would be on par with places like Detroit, St. Louis and Cleveland, where miles and miles of in-city neighborhoods look like the Lower 9 today, but didn't have a Hurricane Katrina that caused them.

I'm glad Uptown and Mid-City have '$700,000 shotgun doubles' (more likely, $400,000 100 year-old houses). Beats having abandoned houses that get burned for insurance and blocks and blocks of empty property.

And this whole "Dallas/Houston/Atlanta" comparison is so overplayed. No. 1, those actual cities themselves are and remain liberal Democratic strongholds, each with crime, crappy schools, and plenty of poor people. No. 2, what those metro areas (not cities, but the metro areas) DO have is ridiculous economies of scale. Once you get as many people as those places have, it's essentially self-feeding growth-- more people means a need for more banks, Walgreens, and dentist offices, thus more people to staff them, and so on, ad infinitum.

This is narrow, cherry picked wishful thinking.
I wish it wasnt. What you describe has allegedly been going on for over a decade with no positive net results. Despite historic amounts of federal infrastructure grant investments, the city's infrastructure has noticeably declined. It is now at a point where boil water notices are to be expected and people in many neighborhoods are stressing out about flooding from simple after noon rain storms.
Gentrification by the hipster and boutique crowd has not attracted any major business investment. We keep hearing about "start-ups" but several short lived small businesses that employ fewer than ten people do not an economic revival make.
Doubling down on tourism/hospitality while alienating corporations, businesses that want to grow, and middle class families is ensuring nola's overt third world status.
Quality, productive young people can't escape fast enough, mostly to Texas.

It is certainly not getting better. In fact, the conditions are worsening more quickly every year.

Love nola. Hate to see it. But thats the red pill truth.

NOLA is without question better than it was before Katrina.

Going back for a week next month. My first visit in a few years. Is there still graffiti everywhere?

There is some.

Do yourself a favor and get out and see the city and not just hang in the quarter.

And, speaking of the French Quarter, it is not just Bourbon Street and all the bars and souvenir shops and drunks, etc. The history of the area needs to be appreciated and understood, but the majority of people who visit and even live here are too simple minded for that.

It is absolutely not better when it comes to things that matter: business friendly environment, political viability, infrastructure functionality. Maybe better in some areas for some people. And maybe compared to August 2005, but it had been in a steep decline for decades prior to Katrina.
"Cool, hip" transients are lipstick on a pig.
Culturally speaking, it is becoming void and plastic. People transplanting generic hipster culture there and calling it "nola" doesnt make it so. One has to look much harder to find any real authenticity anymore. The very nolaphiles preaching authenticity have actually made it more inauthentic.Other than maybe mid city, Metairie is more authentic "New Orleans" than New Orleans at this point.
Talk to people who lived in New Orleans in the 50s and 60s when it was still somewhat a center of global commerce. It is definitely not better now.

Any informed, long view of the city's history shows its decline, which has become steeper, regardless of some pie in the sky, short sighted hopes and dreams.

The substantive requirements for an economic rebound just aren't there and don't seem to be coming any time soon

New Orleans is better than ever. As far as the schools, Nola has better schools than anywhere in the entire state. Even if you consider the government schools, Nola has the top 2 in the state. Of course ALL government schools are questionable in my opinion. Yes even those in Texas. Those schools are NOT up to par with Nola catholic schools. End of story

LOL

I agree that Nola schools are better, but don’t try and compare a few good private schools to what in general are great schools in Texas

Can't be serious. Our schools suck, the fact we have a few charters that are average doesn't make our schools satisfactory for functional people. Have you been outside of New Orleans?
