Court was 4-4 and 1 swing vote (John Roberts) who has been leaning more lib than conservative As of late.
If Trump gets to appoint the new justice, it will be a conservative and the court will be 5-3-1

Justices are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate.
In the last year of Obama's presidency, GOP senate leader McConnell blocked an Obama nominee for the court, claiming that it would be more appropriate to "wait until after the election." Trump won that election, and has now gotten two of his picks for the court confirmed, which is a huge deal. (McConnell has already said he will not apply that standard to the last year of Trump's term.)
SC justices are already considered a huge reason to vote for a candidate, and the possibility (I'd call it a certainty) of having Trump not just nominate a third justice but replace liberal-friendly justice has Democrats freaking the frick out.
Basically, the stakes in this election, which both sides already view as a struggle for the literal survival of America as we know it, just got raised even higher.

I've watched people die, some of cancer, and she might have said that a month ago at best.

Nobody believes she actually said that. She was high as hell on morphine or some other high grade pain medication and was probably rambling on about some dude she blew in the 70s
