Subaru

This. Subarus used to be unbearably ugly. Now i like them much more and they are great cars. The quality and reliability is outstanding.

Another vote for the CX5. Went through this same scenario back in December and we are extremely happy with our decision.

just bought a Subaru Crosstreck in January. Awesome car and I'm averaging 29 MPH commuting into/out of DC. I got it with the eyesight safety features; my son is 12 and when he starts driving he'll need all the help he can get.

Didn't mean to imply $5k savings was from interest difference alone, sorry.
Part of it was Hampton gave me about $750 more for my trade-in, an extra $1,000 rebate, and sticker price was several hundred dollars cheaper.
Supreme was just shady. They took my car registration (for the car I had been driving) to allow me to test drive their car. Said that's required by law. Then I forgot to ask for it back, and sure enough they kept it. Called/emailed them for 3 days to please send it to me. They refused, but kept asking if I had reconsidered on the car I had test drove.
Hampton had to get my registration straight from them.

Forester

I have an 08 Forester that I'm now keeping in MT where she'll finish out her days in a on quiet mountain roads. All I've done is change the oil and tires.

Apparently, Subaru hadn't fully fixed their head gasket problem in 08, so I'll soon be on borrowed time (they start leaking around 100k, and I'm at 86k--hence the semi-retirement).

But the new Foresters get significantly better MPG, and the head gasket issue was fixed in '10.

I still think the generation mine is in looks the best, but that's just me. Plus, mine is rated to tow 2400. The new ones are a dinky 1500 (just like the CR-V and RAV4).

That's why I'm adding an Outback as our everything vehicle.

I'm trying to downsize vehicles, selling my Super Duty and Cherokee so I have to have something that can safely pull an Aliner or loaded trailer.

Kind of a hijack...for everyone that's recommending a Subaru, how is their service? I'm in the same quandary as the OP and have also been considering Subaru. But it's kinda hard to leave that legendary Honda service.

Thanks!

All things considered, in the order you listed them, the Mazda is the best option.

haha. fair point.

I love my cars, but i'm a whipped commie and wife won't let me keep them if i want to buy a new RV (Benz Sprinter-chassis Class B+--so now I'm just an old Nazi).

2000 Jeep XJ 4X4 inline 6 I'm going to take some time to clean up. The stupid ceiling liner is sagging and Jeep needs a little cleaning and new tires. otherwise looks new.145k miles i think.

1999 7.3L Lariat 4X4 F-250 crew-cab shortbed with commercial topper, and 2003 831 Lance truck camper are going too, but this rig is in MT. This truck will be hard to part with. Perfect condition. New brakes, Michelins, glowplugs. 135k miles (just broken in). ugh. maybe i'll just hide them somewhere.

Look hard at some diesel C's before you pull the trigger. Those B+ MB chassis RVs must have gold-plated connecting rods or something b/c they are an assload of money.

This is worth a ton. At 135K (low miles) you can just about name your price. Post it on the OB, or for really top dollar, I'd spring for a picture ad in Hemmings.

Good luck.

Not sure. In 3 years, 80k+ miles I haven't had any issues. Only oil changes and other routine maintenance in that time.

Are you worried about American design or build quality?
I am done with American brands. Been screwed by Chrysler, Ford, and GM dealers, and have regretted each time I bought their oft in need of service products. Not so with Toyotas, and we've had more than one. Also Hyundai. Great service, no hassle. Not much need of service, except scheduled maintenance. Unlike Ford and Chrysler, esp. GM is a little better, esp. Buick. No Chevys. No Jeeps. No Fords or Mercs or Lincoln. Don't like. Don't want. Don't trust.

I live in Bozeman. Name your price.

I'm only kinda kidding. I work at a dealership here and we had a '99 F350 7.3 Lariat crew/long with 53k miles traded in in April.

Sold in half an hour.

I wanted that fricker.

I was happy with my 08 Rogue, 140k miles, CVT did fail at 72k miles, but had it back in 3 days. I changed rear shocks due to towing I imagine, traded it in, in October.
