Lee's success is CRITICAL for our area.
I live in the area and hope it succeeds..
They will struggle to pull kids away from the top private schools and enrollment is booming at the lower levels. I truly felt they should have focused more resources at the elementary/ middle school instead of spending 30 million on Lee..

My son is entering BRMHS next year as a freshman. We live much closer to LEE HS than BRMHS but opted to go to BRMHS just because of the proven track record. This will be quite a change for him as he has been at the same private school since Pre-K.
Now that school is over and reality is setting in that my son will be going to a public school (albeit a very good public magnet school) I wonder if I should consider Dunham or Episcopal. I can pay the tuition although it would hurt. I just want my son to get the best education possible in this city.

Your son will be just fine...

Arguably
1) BRHS
2) Episcopal
3) CHS/St. Joe
4) U-High
5) St. Michael
6) Zachary
It's too early to rate Lee High, but I would look at them too.

BR High is a great school, so if your son applies himself he'll be fine. And if he doesn't apply himself, it really doesn't matter where he goes.

From my recall:
Episcopal
St Joes
CHS
St Michael
U High
Dunham
new Lee High
Woodlawn
Tara
Nothing else really matters
Baton Rouge High is #1
U-High #2
based on the most recent rankings I've seen. I assume Lee will quickly jump up the rankings.

now the real question is which school does every parent try and their kid into but most fail: UHS
Why do so many people try to get into UHS? It seems like the school is consistently mentioned being a notch below Episcopal, Catholic/St. Joe's and BRBH. Do they get so many applicants because of the potential savings in tuition compared to the other private schools?

Yes.
I've heard that Dunham and Episcopal are $20K plus with St. Joe and Catholic around $15K and UHS around 5K. If that's correct, looks like the parents of Episcopal. Catholic, St. Joes are getting what they are paying for. And if UHS isn't that far off from those three in terms of academics, seems like those parents are getting pretty good value for the tuition paid. Now, if Dunham is truly in the 20K plus range, I would be pretty disappointed not to see the school near or at the top of these rankings if i am forking over that amount of money every year.
Do the students who go to BRBH and Lee go tuition free or is there some cost since they are magnet schools? How does that work?

Don't forget about Belaire High School.

BRHS, Lee and all other magnet schools are free.

yes...currently it is around 6800 a year to send your kid there. compared to 10-20 at other private schools.

I think if you're grading a school across the board; athletics, social life, quality of student's and their families, academics, holistic education, then it is very difficult to beat SJA/CHS
