This must be part of the reason we are shutting down a paper machine for one to three weeks.
Seems like you guys should look into using better materials to build your machines out of.
Duh. Stop blaming others for u r dum.

Dumb arse they are shutting down due to the price of paper.
We ship most of our paper by rail and that could be part of problem.
We make some of the best paper in the world and rarely shut down except for planned maintenance.

I have an uncle that works for the railroad and he’s always talked about it as a sweet gig. He has a set route like New Orleans to Jacksonville or something. Seem to remember his schedule being like a nurse with 3 days on 4 days off 4 days on 3 days off, maybe nights sometimes, something like that.

I know 100s of people in the rail industry from kcs, up, bnsf, CN, ns, dow, and nopb. This "strike" is absolutely overblown and will not happen. The unions have basically already come to an agreement which the main perk is a 24% increase in wages spread out over a few years.
The main complaint I hear from anyone is how wages will be lost due to hitting a new tax bracket, so its not actually gaining 24% per year (which is true). Some complain how the new contract will change charges to health care deducts and etc.
Eta: another complaint is how the respective companies will have more control over manpower on extra boards, assigned boards and freight boards.
Meaning the old union contracts had a minimum amount a board could have. Now, the company will have control over this. This gives them the company power to basically eliminate hundreds of jobs that were previously protected.

The possibility of a strike has been going on for awhile now and I’m not sure if rail companies have already been shifting loads and cutting back on some freight already oh what, but I do know that some coal burning power plants that depend on trains to bring them coal have started projecting being down and not available due to lack of coal fuel.
Some are going ahead into fall outages and hope to have coal when it’s time to come online, others may have to extend outages that are already underway. Either way, coal shortages aren’t good for electric power supply and seem like something that shouldn’t happen in the country whose largest fuel source available is coal.

Such a dumb statement and a sure fire way to know that they don’t understand the basics of the U.S tax system. At the very least they’re getting a 22%(boo hoo) raise if they’re right on the tax bracket line. The vast majority will see 24%.

I can say, because I am paid to know so, that coal has been steadily flowing from black thunder mine, wy to lockmoor,la regularly until this week. There are a few reasons to this, but a strike is not at the forefront.

The contract doesn't apply to me. I'm just relaying the concerns/thoughts of the many people I've spoken to.
Eta, every person from Brakeman-conductor-engineer will clear 100k with the raise if they stay 'marked up'

So are the RRs the most awful, toxic. hateful, companies in the world to work for? The way some tell it here, they’re an abomination. But all I’ve ever heard from actual employees is the opposite- great pay, good job. You just have to earn your paycheck. Oh the horror.

Its a union.
The union that represents our ship personnel went on strike two years ago, ended up settling for less than they were originally offered. They wanted 6% over 3 years, settled for 4%. They went back when their health insurance lapsed. Most don't understand, they just do what the union reps tell them.

Basically. It's all seniority based about where and what jobs/board you can hold. In many instances employees can have 10+ years and the closest job they can hold is 3 hours away. But, in some cases you can have 1 year and work 5 minutes from your house. That's part of the quality of life aspect that railroaders have and want addressed, but probably won't be in the contract.
For instance, you're married and have 2 young kids. Would you rather 110k to be at home 4/5 nights a week or 140k to be at home 1/2 nights a week?

I’ve been around enough CON’s and ENG’s to know that their are plenty of smart guys in the union. The problem is the job only requires a high school diploma so plenty of dumbasses too.

So they will pay me extra to get me away from my wife? Is there a 200k for never going home option?
