Let us know how safe you thing SA is after you visit Jburg. I've been to both and they are night and day. Cape Town feels like areas of the United States but Jburg feels more like a war zone. Definitely be aware and cautious when you visit. Definitely not on the same level of safety of Cape Town.

Yea... you lost everyone with this one

But not smallpox, or the numerous other diseases such as measles, whooping cough chicken pox, typhus, etc. which followed after interacting with ships from the new world. Honestly, the new world lived relatively disease free when compared to the old world.

Honestly the only reason it didn't happen was because they weren't smart enough to figure a way.

If they had the brains to build firearms or other more effective weapons, they surely would have.

Instead, they relied on Stone Age technology and were some of the most vile, vicious people around when it came to wiping out other Injuns.....

This isn't true, but I don't have time today to refute this fully. Just one quick example off the top of my head is the hemorrhagic fever called Cocoliztli, which coincided with the Classic Maya Period (around 750 AD) and caused a massive deathtoll. Human populations will always be subject to disease. There is no reason to believe that Mesoamerica or the Mississippian civilizations were "relatively disease free." First, it beggars belief, and secondly, and most importantly, it's not true by any stretch of the imagination.

Racism in South Africa by HarveyBanger

Seems like they're a little past the "racism" and are now in the middle of "race-based violence".

Think there's any chance a bunch of 80's recording artists will get together and make another "Sun City" video asking for the violence to stop?

Neither do I.

This isn't true,

quote:

hemorrhagic fever called Cocoliztli,

Hemorrhagic fever didn't wipe out 30-60% of the total population whereas the bubonic plague did. I did not say they were disease free, i said in the context of being compared to the old world, they were.

The new world did not engage in trade/war with any other landmass until the Spanish landed on the coast, which began the spread of European diseases which many Europeans were immune to at the time due to evolution.

Dude, I agree with the whole genocide thing, but you're wrong not to acknowledge the role new diseases played in Europeans ability to wipe so many people out.

The giant thing is mentioned in Bernal Diaz's Conquest of New Spain. The Tlaxacans showed Cortes these giant bones and then Cortes looks at them and they just move on without mentioning the bones. I'll see if I can't find the passage. It's wild.

It's a growing ideology, if you can call it that. It's even reared it's head within the SEC sports world. There is a huge civil conflict coming down the line and it will look more like GOT than anything we've had in New World history, which it crazy. White liberal maggots and other radicalized groups. The truth is sometimes stranger than fiction.

We don't know the numbers for sure, because we don't have access to population records. The rapid decline of the Maya at the end of the 9th century means that disease is one of the likely culprits.

I've never not acknowledged it. It's one of the four factors (which are disease, displacement, resource destruction and warfare) I've mentioned. And in truth, I might have overstated my opposition to the disease angle as a rhetorical move, because the notion that disease wiped out 90% of the indigenous population is not true (as a whole, there are some small instances where it might be, but generally it isn't). The 90% number comes from the total number of deaths related to colonialism, and not just related to disease, though disease played a significant part.

There are nice parts of Johannesburg like Sandton, but I wouldn’t dare go anywhere near downtown.

Are you trying to say that people who were separated by an entire ocean and had never seen each other were battling the same diseases?

Nope. I'm saying that human populations when they congregate always deal with diseases and epidemics. The cocoliztli hemorrhagic fever is one example of such a new world disease that caused mass deaths.

Then the damn communists stirred up the warlords and the world turned its back on Rhodesia. And they still nearly won!

I worked with a South African guy at my last job. He fought in the South African Border wars and had some pretty crazy stories about fighting Cubans and other communists. Really interesting stuff. Needless to say after the blacks took over he moved to London and has no intention of ever going back to South Africa. I worked some other white South Africans who have said the same and are actively trying to get their families out. One of my fiancées friends who is white, is married to a black South African man. They are having to move to Belgium because of the threats received from black South Africans.

I have been to south Africa and I spent 99.9% of my time there in rural communities with a white landowner and I can say first hand that it is worse than most can imagine. Ive driven around in those slums and watched as the poorest of the poor stare right through every white person they see. If you think youve seen racism in the US, think again. I felt very very very uncomfortable when the whites talked truthfully about apartheid and how much they hate each other bc of the color of their skin.

To bayou's point, i didnt see much "crime" per say but the energy and level of hatred was there that it felt extremely hostile and like it was ready to explode into a civil war a the drop of a hat and to those that say im just a tourist and dont know what im taling ab, that trip prompted me to base my entire senior seminar on SA and African politics when i was in college and the situation has only gotten worse.

Yeah but you said they had dealt with plagues before. No doubt they had, and built up their immune systems to those diseases. That doesnt mean that they weren't affected by the different diseases brought over by the Europeans. I'm not sure what your point is.

It is a fact that the majority of indigenous people here were killed by diseases from Europeans. Also, many Europeans died from diseases contracted once they got here. Just not in the vast numbers the indigenous population did.
