This is going to be a delicate topic, I understand. But I would like opinions from everyone.

My son is 4 years old, his best friend was kicked out of school last week for saying she wasn't someone's best friend because she has brown skin, the friend is Muslim. Its a first offense, but school has zero tolerance. So daycare kicked out the girl and her sister saying the parents are instilling racism in their home. It all started over sharing a book.

Does this result in expulsion from school at 4 years old seem fair? I feel like this would have been a great learning experience.

I'm now questioning how to tell my son why she was kicked out. He has never noticed race before, he loves everyone. But 4 is too young, and why mention something that is just nothing. Friends are friends.

I've talked to the LLotOT about it, but want more opinions.

This has got to be an Episcopal or Unitarian school

The kid heard it from somewhere, but there’s no way to know it came from the parents. Immediate expulsion seems a bit harsh, but policy is policy I guess.

I agree a learning experience has likely been wasted.

Little kids say stuff that they don't know what it means. Seems like a leap to say the parents are instilling racism at home? Seems like the school would have a bit more compassion and use it as a teaching moment.

That’s ridiculous. Kids say crazy stuff all the time. They are kids.

That's such dumb fricking shite. Those kids would have probably been best friends tomorrow.

4 year olds aren't smart enough to form racial biases unless the parents are raging racists and talk about it nonstop.

Even in that case, they would just be repeating words without understanding the meaning.

I would switch to a daycare that doesn't have a thought crime policy for four year olds.

so instead of a school teaching a child how to not do that they kick them out... seems right.

What if the 4 year old just didn't want to be besties because the other kid looked different? Doesn't mean that the parents are instilling racism.

Expelling a 4 year old for not wanting to be best friends with another kid. Dumbest shite I've heard of.

Something seems missing here.
One kid says to another kid something about brown skin and the whole family is kicked out?

I’d have dressed in my finest Muslim garb for the meeting with the school admins.

First, there's nothing in your post that would indicate that the girl "learned" this anywhere. It could have been as innocent as not "liking her" for having blonde hair, or talking funny. At 4, there's no reason to assume "racism" as it's understood and more likely just to be "different." My son was around that age and one time while he was with me at Target he refused to talk to the lady behind the counter at the deli and got mad when a baby started crying near us. When I asked him at the counter what his problem was, he looked right at me and said, "I don't like babies or ladies with chef hats!" he's gonna be 15 this week and I probably quote this line once a month...and I'm fairly sure he's not bigoted against babies or chefs.

Of course not. You talk to kids and find out what's going on. Zero tolerance policies are the lazy way of applying rules so that no thinking or effort needs to take place.

Good. School and childhood is not a place to learn and develop as a person.

I don’t think it’s fair for the child. How do we know if the parents are instilling racist values at home?

Maybe the child stated the friend has ‘brown skin’ as a mere observation- what if she would’ve said pink bow or blue shoes?

It should’ve been a learning experience because now the little girl was removed from her best friend because of the brown girl. And that may instill racist judgments.

Seems extreme for pre school…

They aren’t old or mature enough to grasp that concept
