I understand that they are possibly angling to charge a hate crime because the poor kid was disabled, but to come out and stick their head in the sand about the obvious racial component is incredibly tone deaf. It makes the police look even stupider than people already think they are.

this is just not true
I am surrounded by liberals every day, and you are wrong. My friends and family are full of libs. Reddit, a community known as the single most left leaning site in all of the internets, is up in arms over this.
Bear this in mind: not labeling this a hate crime goes against everything the left has protested about. It completely undermines what the left stands for.

it's amazing because many who believe this isn't a hate crime are the same ones advocating for equality. It makes no sense. How can they not realize that this is just going to pour a dump truck of fuel on the fire for those who are racist? Now you're giving them a reason to be angry. It just doesn't make sense from 1000 different angles.
