First marriage. 17+ years. Divorce ain't an option.

All kidding aside: She's an angel. I tell her that in a past life she either did something really bad (to deserve me), or I did something really good (to deserve her).

While that's probably true it's very misleading. It doesn't imply that second and thirds are less successful. This statistic is to be expected because it includes all the people who can't stay married. If one was good marriage material they wouldnt have made it to the second or third to begin with, typically.

I don't know if it's misleading. To me it implies generally that people who make bad choices and don't do things to make marriages work tend to repeat those failures in subsequent attempts.

Just celebrated 43 years with #1. I think we are kind of stuck with each other now. Wife says she doesn't want to train another husband anyway.

What's confusing? It makes sense to me

The divorcees skew the sample pool for second and third marriages.

If anything, it shows how skewed the overall divorce rate statistic is that some people like to use in this threads. Including all these people that clearly suck at maintaining a marriage makes it look like divorce is far more frequent than it actually is.

I believe Salmon is confused why he's saying it's misleading for the multiple marriage group, and not the first time marriage group.

it isn't misleading because it does show that 2nd and 3rd marriages are more likely to fail

mostly because people that make bad decisions will continue to make bad decisions

the 2nd and 3rd divorce rates are the ones that skew the overall divorce rates because its a small group of people that just keep getting married and divorced over and over again

I’m on my first. Was 7 years this past April. I can see why some are on their 2nd.

I met my first and only wife in 1989 , we were married in 1994, and our marriage has only gotten better with time. Probably just luck.
