Questions for those who have worked in the service industry or as restaurant kitchen staff

Long story short:
I eat at restaurants almost every day, and usually the same 15-20 in my neighborhood. From fast food to the finest dining and everything in between. I have never worked at any type of restaurant.
Questions:
1.) I've seen the movie Waiting. What is the frequency by which kitchen and/or wait staff mess with people's food and how?
3.) Are regular customers more or less prone to being victims of these criminal offenses?
3.) Does this happen more at nicer eateries or the shittier ones?

That sort of thing doesn't happen very often. It might happen more now with people filming it for tiktok but these are not the finer establishments.
Also no one plays the dick showing game. The part about all restaurant workers being smokers is true though

I worked in a fairly nice restaurant in college and in my 20s. Not once did I ever see anyone frick with a person’s food.
The extent of it was pouring a few drops of alcohol in the straw of a person who complained that their drink was “too weak” and sent it back

I really appreciate these responses because as you can imagine this is a concern for many folks.

The one thing we did was overcook food. Certain groups of people like their burgers and steaks well done. They didn't complain about getting hockey picks for burgers so it must have been ok

Anytime someone ordered something well done, we were basically instructed to let them know “you aren’t sending this back, you get what you get” beforehand

They don't. They might purposefully make something incorrectly or cook something to the wrong temp, but never do anything on that level in the movie.

I worked in a half dozen restaurants. There was one where you had a decent chance of getting f’ed with if you were a complete a-hole. Regulars would have been less likely to catch hell than strangers. I didn’t stay there long but to say that it never takes place is inaccurate.
No one gives a shite about who you are or how often you eat there if you are a normal person (questionable based on posts in this thread), a decent tipper, and aren’t a jerk.

Worked at one of the nicest restaurants in New Orleans. I’ll never get lemon in my water again. They don’t clean that shite and keep it very close to the floor
