Question For Those With A Hybrid Vehicle

Last week, I observed a Toyota SUV operating in hybrid (all electric) mode. If you own a hybrid, does your A/C compressor run when in electric mode? I'm only familiar with A/C compressors that run off a pulley and belt, with power that is supplied by the engine. If the engine is shut off for fuel efficiently, do you continue to receive cold air? What powers the compressor in these situations? TIA

Naw, the DC compressor runs in the all electric mode brah.
Try to keep up.

The compressor just needs to be spun, whether by a belt or an electric motor. Since we can be pretty certain that no one is buying all electric vehicles without a/c, whatever those vehicles use is probably what is used in hybrids.

Bookmarked for when someone says there is no such thing as a dumb question.

I drove a Prius yesterday for the first time, and although the AC would keep running when the engine stopped, it wouldn’t run for long on battery before restarting the engine. Now, maybe that’s because the car is old and the battery is shite, but it needed the ICE to keep up with yesterday’s 100 degree weather.

Toyota hybrids use an A/C compressor that uses the belt drive when the engine is running and switches to battery power when the engine is not running

Hybrid Rav4. No AC volume drop when in all electric. Sitting waiting for curbside food can run AC the whole time until the battery gets below 30% then the engine turns on to recharge the battery pack.

i just bought a jeep wrangler 4xe plug in hybrid. The ac runs in all electric mode. I can remote start it and basically nothing turns on but the electric motor and ac and it wil run for 5-10 minutes before it starts to draw a lot of battery.

Many new hybrids and plug in hybrids have the option to run the A/C when the care is off, pretty good option IMO.

I checked a Toyota parts website. For a 2020 Prius the air conditioning compressor and the drive motor are a single unit (a $1500 unit).
I'm assuming this motor is powered by the battery pack, so it can indeed run while the gas engine is shut down.
