Last night around 9 PM in SE Texas specifically the Beaumont and Lumberton areas very severe storms hit seemingly out of nowhere. I’m talking 80 mph straight line winds, trees down all over the place and about 60,000 people without power. I checked my weather app around 3 yesterday and it showed a 40% chance of rain around 4 and that was it. What caused storms this severe to just pop up at night like that?

It was forecast pretty well by the SPC. They had an Enhanced threat that was primarily wind and hail driven with a non-zero tornado threat.

The weather apps aren't that great at anything other than "It gone rain".

There's a similar setup today/tonight with the Southeast, including MS, AL, TN, KY. 30% for severe wind and hail.

ETA: If you want something to replace your over-simplified generic weather app, check out the wX app. Just search the store for "wX weather app".......it is just called wX.

You can get more than you will ever need. The big things is a more accurate, NWS driven local forecast, and a direct link to the SPC's outlook that doesn't require seeking out their webpage.

Isn’t this usually something associated with fronts? Did a front come through? If not what caused the setup? TIA

Was this just really badass thermal storms?

Pretty much. It was a series of weaker shortwaves that rolled through. Also, some boundaries that were laid down by other storms.

On iOS, it appears to be listed as "wXL23." Here is the link to the FAQ, which the majority of us are going to need.

That's it. You won't need to learn what all of that stuff is. At least on Android I can get a widget on my homescreen that auto-updates the SPC outlook. The 7 day forecast is under "Local". It also has a direct link to all the NWS weather stations that you can check for current conditions in a given area.

It is a really handy, underrated weather app that you can grow with if you are learning more about weather, or just use the features you need.

The four-panel free NOAA radar is big plus for people who don't want to pay for a premium radar app.

I’m in West Houston and I started getting lighning alerts around 10:00. I checked my weather app and not a cloud on the radar but lightning strikes everywhere. Strong winds, lightning, clouded skies when I looked outside but not a drop of rain and forecast ranged for 0% - 40% rain during the range of 10:00 - 6:00 am..

Either my app (Clime) was messed up or something really odd was happening around this time. It never rained a drop at my house.

Most explanations for thunderstorms I've read omit mention of how powerful they can quickly become. First, warm moist air heated at the ground rises, expands and cools. That's when a second source of air heating kicks in. The condensing water vapor dumps lots of heat into the surround air. That accelerates the rising air...the updraft becomes a very powerful suction pump with the intake near the ground sucking in strong winds.

If rotation of other factors confine the updrafts to a small region, conditions can become locally extreme. Most weather predictions are best at tracking large frontal movement. They are bad at predicting locally originating storms.

Global warming is real. More spontaneous and rougher storms.

Heat. My wife's flight from SLC to DFW to MSY was delayed eight hours altogether.
