I've only worked in one big corporate office (at a local credit union in Baton Rouge -I'll withhold the name as to not incriminate).

The truth is only about 50% of the people did 100% of the work. My VP (can't speak for the others) was not qualified for the job. From my perspective, she got there by being a company man, and surviving the extraordinary turnover for years and years.

Most large companies have departments like you described in the OP; HR, IT, accounting, upper management, secretarial, ect. They also have other departments depending on what field the company is in. I work at an engineering and architecture firm, so we have the previous mentioned departments as well as civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and architecture departments.

Surfing the internet mostly until lunch, then leave for lunch, come back and maybe answer an email, browse social media during a meeting they really don't need to be in but accepted to fill holes in their calendar.

From an outsider's prospective, that's what I see from most of the support groups I have around me.

And there is no accountability either.

I need to get out of management and go back to being lemming.

You have people who do the actual work, probably 60% of the company. The other 40% are people who find ways to simply justify their jobs and salaries, which usually means bothering the real workers and making the real workers job more difficult.

Why has nobody here mentioned supply chain? That’s a huge component of any business.

Question for people who work in office buildings
What do the majority of people in large companies do?

You know that machine with the big vat of hot oil that you drop batch after batch of fries in? Well, some of the people who work in office buildings design those "machines" and they also try to improve them to make them easier for you idiots to use.

They are also currently working on designing robots to do your job for you, real soon.

Sourcing and distributing to clients isn’t supply chain?

As in we don't have a logistics or supply chain department. I'm just using that as an example of why the original question is dumb, because different companies are going to have highly different structures.

Don't forget sales support (someone has to do the sales person's paperwork) and payroll

Yea - real good theory here.

Let me go work in the sun, rain, hot, and cold to make $60k per year, when I can work in my office, salaried, come and go as I please, and get a 1x a year bonus of almost that amount.

What an idiot...
