Question for people who deal with the AT&T "next plan"

Probably have to bite the bullet and get a new phone today. My 5s is on its last breath. I can't download anything. I've deleted a ton of apps and turned my phone on/off, hoping I'd be able to download the apps I needed but nothing has worked.
I'll be signing up for the next plan and I hate it. I miss the old days of signing a new contract and making one payment of $100-$200 and being done.
My question is when I sign up, I know I am allowed to keep my current phone but will I still be able to listen to Apple Music on it? I'd rather keep all music stuff on th 5s so I don't logjam my new phone with it. Will all the music on my 5s stay as is? I don't use the cloud at all by the way.

It will act like an iPod. I have a couple older ones I let my kids use. Music and videos work fine and they have some apps on there too.

You don't really have to do the next plan. I kept my plan last December and got a 64Gb Note 5 and 64Gb Galaxy S6 for my wife for $200 total and changed nothing else.
Call ATT and ask for the retention dept immediately when they answer the phone.

I bought a OnePlus 3 so I don't have a phone purchase contract and it connected automatically to AT&T the second I put the SIM card in. No bloatware and the phone runs great. I'll never get a phone through AT&T again. Unlocked is the way to go.
My wife kept her old phone and uses it at work to listen to music she purchased so yes you can do that. Just need wifi

Don't do the next plan. Just buy a new phone outright and have them put it on your current plan. Backup your phone on iTunes before you go and restore for last backup after you get the new phone.

Yes. You will be able to use your old phone as a music device/wifi device.
Sometimes they run ridiculous deals where they give you twice what it is worth toward trade in though.
I hate the Next plan as well, but as others have said, you are paying the same or less over the long run. The cost of the phone is no longer rolled into the plan.

Just because you can't download anything doesn't mean your phone sucks and is "on its last leg." Go to your settings > storage and iCloud usage > manage storage. This will show you what apps are using up all your memory. I found out that a big chunk was being eaten up by the iPhone messaging app because it was set to keep all text messages and content forever. That's a lot of pics and videos. So it could be something simple like that.
If you do get a new phone, I'd just buy it outright. It's cheaper in the long run. You can also get a used and unlocked iPhone 6 or 6s on eBay or Craigslist if you don't want to shell out over $500 You may get a discount from ATT for using your own phone (ask them).

Another piece of advice. Over time the phone fills up with "other" data that should be periodically wiped. The only way to do this is to reset the phone (erase iPhone) and then restore your backup. I have cleared as much as 10 GB by doing this. It's helped me keep my iPhone 5 running fine delaying the need to upgrade. Hope this helps.

His current plan is likely priced higher than the monthly service plan on the next platform since it was built when carriers we subsidizing phone cost within the monthly usage plans.
Best action is to buy phone outright and move to next monthly service plans unless you have unlimited data or something unique that's no longer offered.
Edit: I like the new "next" style plan better since it will put pricing pressure on the manufacturers to get costs down. Consumers are finally factoring in cost of the handset into the decision.

Wifi will still work just fine. The phone simply will not make cellular based phone calls/data/activities. All other functions will still work.

It's being weird. Got the new one. Deleted a ton of apps off old phone and trying to download an extra music app on old phone (planning on basically using it as an iPod for the gym). The app I'm trying to download says "waiting..". Will not turnover to load.
Any idea how to fix this?

The phone will do everything it has been doing except make cellular based calls and texts. You can still download apps, still FaceTime and make FaceTime audio calls, facebook, etc as long as it is connected to wifi.
