Question for OT mechanics

Our vehicle has been having some A/C issues and recently some power steering issues. The A/C only blows cold when the temperature is below 80. We brought it to a mechanic and he said it was overcharged and he needed to bleed it and fill to a normal level. He said since the power steering runs off of the same belt as the a/c it should fix those issues also. What do the master mechanics of the OT think?

Ever since they quit using needle bearings in the a/c they can't blow cold like they used to.

On the surface, that sounds like a bunch of bullshite. How would your a/c have gotten overcharged?

An A/C can be overcharged but unless you have had work done on it then it couldn't have miraculously gained refrigerant. If you have had work done then it is possible for it to be overcharged but it needs to go back to that mechanic to fix the issue.
An A/C system that is overcharged does require more power at the compressor BUT the power is derived from a belt connected to the crank so there is way more than enough power to run all the accessories.
The only possible way I see this being a cause of the PS issue is if the extra power the compressor needs has caused the belt to slip over the compressor pulley and has polished it enough that it is now slipping over the PS pump pulley. In that case you need to replace the belt after the A/C is fixed.

Had work done last summer but the problem didn’t start until around January or February. It was still cold then so we waited to get it looked at. Then the COVID nonsense further delayed our urgency to fix the issue.

Not on that car if its relatively new. The Escape, like many newer cars, uses electric power assist. I don't know if the a/c compressor is on the same circuit.

Obtuse nailed it. The belt might be slipping but one should hear some squealing. Quick test would be to turn the A/C off and see if you continue to have the power steering issue.

How much did they quote you? Hub City Ford here in Lafayette wants $600 for an ac part and $1800 for the labor. Absolute insanity.

If it had been overfilled, it’s immediate regarding symptoms. You would not have driven off the mechanics lot due to it blowing warm.
