local attorney just posted this on FB

quote:

2018 has gotten off to a great start for our office! Our managing partner,*********, received two awards in recognition of his service to our clients and case success rates.

The American Institute of Personal Injury Attorneys acknowledged **** for his “exceptional and outstanding client service” and the National Academy of Criminal Defense Attorneys recognized him as a a Top 10 criminal defense attorney under the age of 40.

BBB Advises Consumers To Scrutinize Top Lawyer Awards

some of the fake groups/outlets BBB lists:

quote:

National Academy Awards, which solicits under the names National Academy of Criminal Defense Attorneys, National Academy of Family Law Attorneys, National Academy of DUI Attorneys and National Academy of Personal Injury Attorneys. Although the businesses have a mailing address and virtual office in Washington, D.C., they were registered in 2013 in Oklahoma City, Okla. Members are Shannon Rich and Ken D. Kerr Jr. A website for the criminal defense attorneys group calls the academy “an organization devoted to recognizing the top criminal defense attorneys in the nation.” The organization responded to a June 5 BBB request for information on Aug. 15, saying: “We no longer have an honoree selection committee, but instead allow our current members to choose each year’s nominees.” The sender of the email was not identified.

quote:

American Institute Group, which uses several other names including American Institute of Criminal Law Attorneys, American Institute of Family Law Attorneys, American Institute of Bankruptcy Attorneys, American Institute of Elder Law Attorneys and American Institute of DUI/DWI Attorneys. American Institute Group was registered in the state of Hawaii in July 2014 and lists Cynthia Stanley of Honolulu as its only member. In a recent nomination letter, Stanley called American Institute of Family Law Attorneys an impartial third-party rating service “recognizing excellence of practitioners in the field.” American Institute Group has not responded to a BBB request for information about the organization.

is this worse than the typical/standard "advertising PI" firm? at least they're honest about what they do, directly and indirectly

these "pay for play" awards seem almost unethical in how they're advertised

Yes. Absurd. When I first the saw Super Lawyers book I took it down to a colleague's office thinking it was a spoof. Nope. Real adult "professionals" engage in this silliness.

I've always ignored requests to participate/nominate (as you, say, pay for play).

These days being a lawyer with $1K of disposable income to waste on a fake award is worthy of actually getting an award if you ask me.

Local guy here I know had a good Facebook post about this last year. He was offered to be one of the Best Lawyers in the State of Wyoming if he only paid $475 for the plaque. Only problem was he had never stepped foot in the state and was not licensed to practice there

Ive been “referred” by some for these pay-for-play awards. It’s lwqys funny how those who referred me are confidential.

Yes. I scoff.

i don't even see how this would be a valuable marketing tool

the people who won't look it up likely don't care and certainly aren't hiring a lawyer who has the most/best awards

and the clients who may care (corporations, educated people, etc), will look it up

Its just a participation trophy you buy yourself. When you see a 2 yr lawyer promoting themselves as a Super Lawyer when you know all they have done is make copies and write research memos....
