It didn't work for me, but it definitely taught me a lesson.

Soap is too rare lately to waste. Use a Tide Pod instead.

Mom used Octagon on me once. Still remember the taste. Worked pretty well

My mother used Tabasco, not soap.

6 is pretty young to swear, but they’re probably just repeating words they learned from you.
By the time they get into six grade though, every kid swears when they’re away from their parents. It’s just a natural rebellious thing that’s only fun to them because adults make such a big deal about it, like you’re doing now.

My mom just slapped the bad words out of my mouth. Very effective

Spray some vinegar cider. Just use it as a threat. You will never have to spank or wash a mouth out with soap again.
My wife kept a spray bottle of vinegar in the kitchen cabinet to use whenever the kids said something they shouldn’t have. They are in their twenties now and were just talking about that last week. LOL

I got the lye soap + the spanking for saying bad words.

Is it possible it could be effective AND cruel?

We had a spoon full of Tabasco
I can still taste it.

I didn’t read all the replies. I’m 51 and I ate a lot of soap in my youth. My parents never made me eat soap but the nuns at my elementary school thought that soap was a necessary addition to my daily diet. I went to boarding school from 7th grade through graduation and the discipline there made eating soap for cursing seem like getting frozen yogurt for desert. I would never make my kids eat soap no matter what they said. Don’t do it. They might smother you in your sleep or make the easy decision to pull your plug later.

What word did the kid say and what was the context?

Putting soap in 6 year old’s mouth after saying bad word
A) He learned it from his parents
B) A good old fashioned caning would be quicker and more effective.
