PSA: There's a blood shortage

Just a heads up. In areas where the ice storm hit hard, there's a blood shortage. The banks haven't been open for a week. But there have been plenty of car crashes and trauma. Blood supply is critically low in a lot of areas.
Give if you can!

I'm O- and I'm pretty sure LifeShare has me on speed dial.

IMO, if they'd offer more than a cheap t-shirt for giving blood, they'd have no problem getting all they needed.

Same here. Got my text already this week. I’ll go next month. Gonna start going once a quarter.

Not a bad deal to sit for a few minutes, have them do the work, then go drink for half the amount it would usually cost

I never understood how they convince people to give blood for free (for a tshirt), the hospitals turn around and sell/charge insurance god knows what cost to use the blood on a patient.
How did this donation type system get set up in the first place? Why isn’t it all done like plasma?

I’ll help out. Wife works in the industry. The amount of testing that goes into clearing a unit of blood for a patient is not trivial. There are entire departments that are staffed 24/7/365 to make sure that blood is screened, typed, matched, tracked, issued, etc to make sure that it is safe for patients. Then add on top of that local, state, and federal regulations for compliance personnel to manage appropriate documentation and standards and that’s a whole extra layer of expenses.
So yeah, hospitals charge for that blood. They also have to do a lot of work form a legal and regulatory perspective to make that blood available. I assure you it is not a profit center for hospitals.

I have another appt to donate Covid Convalescent Plasma this week.
Eventually I'll be back to giving whole blood or double red but might as well get this out there while I have antibodies.

About 50 years ago, when you gave blood they paid you
$ 15 to 25. Then it got to where lots of people on drugs tried to give blood to get the money. So they quit paying people to give blood.
