TLDR: keep your head on a swivel and have an oh shite plan while driving
Last Thursday night was on my way from New Orleans airport to Saint Amant. Thankfully the rain was north and there were good driving / visibility conditions. Exit 1-10 at Airline and head north. Car ahead of me (maybe a tenth of a mile) all of a sudden hits breaks and makes an aggressive move right. Next thing I see is headlights or someone driving south on the northbound side of Airline. Given he is coming at say 50-70MPH (no idea) I had a split second to decide what to do. Fortunately he was in the northbound fast lane and I was in the right lane. Instinctively (because I had previously thought of the what if in the situation) I moved right but didn’t jerk to prevent heading into the canal/trees right off the shoulder. Driver proceeded to keep hauling arse southbound and I proceed to check to see if I shite myself. Moral of the story is to think about what you may do in a situation before it occurs.
Spoke with my kids about the risk of going left vs right If I was in the same lane as the approaching car. I know a lot of you travel ball parents spend a lot of time with Braxxxton in the car on the way to tourneys so you may want to spend that time teaching your kids some potential life saving trips.
CSB and always expect the unexpected.

From your kid’s prospective this sounds like Charlie Brown’s teacher.

Why didn’t you accelerate and drive strait at him flashing your brights?
Dude wanted to play chicken and you folded, loser.
Oh and it’s “moral”, not “morale”. Yeah, I know, spellcheck.

That was the initiation into OweO’s gang, the “HotWheelers” you witnessed.
You were lucky to survive. Most don’t.
They’re some really bad eggs.

Defensive driving.
Always be aware of what’s going on around you.

This schtick is getting much overuse.

Average reaction time from observing a dangerous situation to decision to action is 3.50 seconds

That was a completely unnecessary option. Got undercoating instead.

I’m raising my kids with enough sense to get out of the way no need for further discussion on that topic.
“Don’t run into stuff stupid”. Will be the lesson.
Problem is a whole lot of kids have never had any experience making any decisions as they never are challenged. Then parents just toss em the keys

Yeah dumbass could have left that out and spared us a whole carfull of travel ballers once they got taken out.
Now I gotta deal with Braxxxxxxxxxton and his truck nuts, tats and offspring for the rest of my life. FML

A similar thing happened to me a few years ago. I was in the left lane on the interstate coming out of NO headed home to BR. It was late at night and everyone had their lights on. One part of the road has a rather sharp curve to the right. Since the road curves to the right, it appears that opposing traffic is in front of you. It is an optical illusion, so I didn't think much about it.
Thankfully, some of the oncoming cars were blinking their lights as they passed. Thinking there was a cop up ahead, I slowed a little and moved into the right lane. Less than ten seconds later, a car going fast the wrong way in the left hand lane passed me. I was pretty shaken up, and, like you had to go check my pants after that.

Everyone instinctively moves to the right whether you’ve thought about it before or not. If you go to the left, you’re more likely to get hit by the oncoming driver swerving right.
