PSA: Alaska Air reduced carry on size

Such a cluster this morning..,requiring everyone to see if their bag fits in the new metal carryon box. 75% of the overhead space is empty because they are forcing everyone with standard carry on size bags to check to final destination.
This used to be one of my favorite airlines but I’m done with them if this is the policy going forward. Frequent travelers, you have been warned.

This may be a dumb question but what is the reasoning for this? Is it a weight/fuel economy issue?

Airlines are so annoying with this shite - raise your fricking ticket prices and stop haggling your customers over every other thing. It makes the experience very trashy and lowbrow. I feel like a goddamn prince when I travel on Amtrak now because you don’t get hassled.

Starting June 4th, 2018, Alaska Airlines' carry on is 45 linear inches (22 x 14 x 9in)
That is the standard size all other airlines except for SW allow. Luckily the past couple years a bunch of companies have come out with new luggage fitting that size requirement.

Carry-ons have gotten ridiculous. It used to be a small bag or backpack and now days it's literally a small suitcase with a personal bag (which is the size of what a carry-on used to be.
People are taking up an entire bin by themselves.

I know what you mean. American airlines seem like shite compared to the times I’ve traveled international and flew in Qatar Airways and Emirates

Wait, I thought the new Boeing planes had the bigger overhead bins where you stand the bags on their sides? Those were actually bigger.

I'm actually with this guy on this. I'm sitting in the gate area looking at all of these fricking suitcases wondering what the frick are these people thinking. I get that you don't want to pay a $25 fee to check it, but you are going to slow down the entire boarding process when they tell you are the gate it has to be checked and you argue with them. It's absurd. Just pay the fricking $25 and move on with your life.

This gets even more fun when these same people put their carry on bags in the first open spot they see, as opposed to using the bin over their own seat.

Yup hate that too. If you’re among the last to board, there is no more room for your bag so it goes down below. Always the douches in the back of the plane that do that.

They really need to label the overhead to match the seat numbers. You buy a ticket and you get a seat and an overhead spot. Those fricks in 32A stow their bag in the overhead spot at 11B and then when the guy in 11B gets on and his bag ends up over seat 22C. Then when the plane lands and everyone leaps to their feet, the guy in 11 creates chaos by refusing to deplane until he gets his bag.

Not as trashy as an airline traveler waddling down the jetway with a roller, a back pack, a satchel, a neck roll, a set of headphones, a bag of Panera bread, and a Snuggie on a flight from Atlanta to Greenville.
It’s 20 minutes dickwad, just get on the goddamn plane and do the crossword puzzle

This is a solid rant
Those measurements have been the federal guidelines going back to 2012 when I bought our carry-ons. The airlines seemed to not enforce them as strictly the last few years.
Last few planes I’ve boarded, I’ve seen much larger bags getting rolled and jammed into bins.
My bigger problem is when the crew far underestimates the available space as people board. Had to check at the gate due to “lack of space” on the last flight I was on, and there were 2 completely empty bins above my seats when I sat down.

This would be the solution. Another problem is people putting their personal item that goes under the seat in the carry on compartment

Lol
They probably have a 32oz drink and didn't pee before boarding too.

It’s because the airlines are constantly finding new ways to cram more people into 737s.

Well, they started charging to check bags. If they stopped that, they wouldn't have near the issues.
I never check bags. I have a carry-on that is maximum size allowed and a small backpack that can fit under the seat. That is all I need even for the longest of vacations.

Now THIS drives me up a wall.
Inevitably leads to people who sit in the front having to put their bags in the back, so the deboarding process takes fricking forever.

I haven't had to deal with that (military).

You must be short as frick if you don't have to use that little bit of room under the seat for your feet.
