This is the correct answer. They put a loop inside or even just reach through and grab the other persons hand (what they do with PVC pipe). It just keeps the police from prying their fingers off the grip. This is the part where the police just hose them down with pepper spray and make it suck so bad that they decide to let go in order to rub their face.

Ive got a couple ideas.
Stand next to them and talk about how bad I need to go the bathroom. That always makes everyone have to go.
Pour water and essentially waterboard the dude in the middle.
