But a recent proposal in Sweden seeks to give men the right to choose a “legal abortion” — not by terminating the pregnancy, but by declaring they’ll opt out of the child’s life, financially and physically. They would have to do so before the 18th week of pregnancy, the point at which abortion becomes illegal in Sweden.

Nilsen claims it would protect men from women looking to trap them into fatherhood, either by lying about infertility or birth control. Mitchell, a Boulder, Colorado–based attorney and retired professor of family law, likes the idea, saying she’s seen too many cases of women fooling men into impregnating them; the idea, she argues, would even “a playing field that has been uneven for far too long.

Pretty much all you have to do is fill out some paperwork to get exempt from child support.
I'm writing JBE a letter right now. Let's fight for our rights baws!

If this happened in America girls would just try to hide that they are pregnant until the time period passed

Seems like all this would do is encourage more real abortions. Either way, the baby is the one that really loses here.

I'd imagine there would have to be a stipulation where the father (or potential fathers) had to be notified so they could make their decision.

This.

Once again, it's the children who suffer because of our inability to be responsible.

Friend of mine brought up in interesting point. Without child support, we the taxpayers will likely be picking up the tab.

Just another scenario where personal responsibility both before and after need to be exercised.

What if the mother doesn't tell you she's pregnant until after 18 weeks?

Our tax structure would have to be far more progressive for this to work or make sense. I'm gonna guess that that makes this idea a lot less lucrative to most here.

Sweden is a weird place anyway. I know a few Swedes, and their cultural male/female relationship setup is very female-dominated. Every Swedish man I've ever talked to confirms this. Beautiful women; very dominant women.

I think Sweden's take here is: Ok, Leif, we're better off as a country if you focus on your software career, let the state pick up the child support tab, and you get to stay away from that horribly mean bitch for the rest of your life.

I was speaking more to the event that the mother wants the child but the father does not and opts out under a law like the op mentioned.
