I’m all about a grand wagoneer and gutting the insides and going crazy on the 4wd.

I'd do what he wants, if I was you. He's 16, it'll be of more interest to him until he finds out the power of pussy. Which, at 16, he probably has already. So, you have to have a car that will appeal to him to want to work on with you.

Cut the exhaust in front of the muffler and tell him you rodded it out. I’ve seen this work on about half the young drivers in the NOLA area. Also will need a 20” sub crammed into the car.

Parts can be a bitch.
Get a mid 90schevy pickup. 350. Lower 2/4. Nice wheels and tires.
350 cheap rebuild. Parts for that truck are easy and cheap also.
Looks great. I had a 96 I lowered 2/4. Did some work to it. Fast as hell. Sounded great. Parts were readily available. 2 10s fit under the seat.
4:10 rear end with a stage 2 kit in the transmission, and a hot cam in a bored 350 is easily doable and won't kill the bank.
Old man I know has a white 96 v6 showroom condition. If he ever unloads it I'm buying it for me an the boys to fix/give to em.

For first time, I’d say a Chevy Nova. Simple interior, Easy to work on and look damn good with nice wheels and tires.

Do it! I rebuilt a 69 Chevelle with my dad when I was 16 and it was some of the best times of my life. I picked up my wife in that car on our first date and she said she smelled like gasoline for 3 days. 
Stick with a pretty common car/build with easy to buy parts, That will keep the price down and it will be easier to maintain over the years. We didn’t go with a stock rebuild, so that was fun fabricating random parts at some local machine shops.

I bought my 11 yo a 2000 K3500 single cab dually with a 454 and a 5 speed.
Every time I look at that truck...and I love the body style to begin with....I think when they built it, the guys on the line KNEW it was a cool one.
We’re kicking around a Cummins swap- but not a regular one. I have an 8.3 in my shop.
