Sounds a little unhinged. Especially if all the people in the consultant did this, maybe their IT disabled their cameras etc..

I run into this often. For all of our international customers/vendors except for 1, they hold meetings without the cameras on because it helps preserve the bandwidth. If they try to hold a meeting with several people on their side and multiple people have cameras on, the meeting gets interrupted constantly.

When dealing with the various governmental agencies in the US (State & Federal), they have internal rules about camera usage. For the most part, it is mandated that they operate with their camera's off because of "the legalize about "recordings" in some jurisdictions". Since you cannot control who may be recording and you do not always know where the other party may be located, by default they insist that the cameras stay off.

If there is any validity to the OP, and this was a consulting firm; they could have similar rules/standards based on their clientele.

yea..... no. I have certain standing and leadership meetings I turn my camera on for.... but most times people teams call me it could be a fricking email or teams message. certainly no need to turn my camera on.

also... frick you if you jump on a teams video call and proceed to eat an inch away from the camera

Pre covid everyone did conference calls on phones without cameras

I definitely don’t understand why simple voice calls are avoided nowadays.

Surprised the wifi at the Holiday Inn is fast enough for a teams call.

I do agree that you should have camera on for meetings, with some exceptions.

You have to be super self-conscious with an over inflated sense of self worth to be so concerned that the people on the other end of the line aren't paying attention.

Considering who the OP pretends, I mean, claims to be, this definitely checks out.

If you’re interacting on a call or meeting with people outside the company, have your camera on. Nothing is more disrespectful and unprofessional than everyone having their camera on and yours is off esp if speaking or being asked a question. Had a consultant of all people that routinely did this, and finally cut them loose this morning. Work was mediocre at best, but this sent me over the edge. When their company calls and asks for feedback that’s exactly what I’m going to tell them.

Rant over.

No, frick you. You also have 0 authority at your job to cut anyone lose.

Have tape over my camera just in case it ever got turned on by mistake. I also don't have a profile pic on my Teams profile. You want to see me, get off your arse and come to the plant and conduct business face to face. I have been running my division 26 years so if you don't know what I look like, I most likely have no idea who you are and don't care. Once I hit 55 and retire, corporate can hire someone that gives a crap about their Teams protocols.

We’re generally a camera on firm, but our meetings aren’t some one presenting and people listening. They’re going back and forth about deliverables and what needs to be done. I find it helps people not talk over each other.

Office of firm wide meeting are obviously different and cameras off because it’s one person talking.

For clients, I always join at first with camera off and just do whatever they do

yea there are times when you have them on. but for normal everyday meetings, we want someone sharing a screen so you can see drawings etc so you dont need the cameras on.

if you are having dialogue yea...it helps but we have gone back to most of them being in person anyways.

Is it a policy to have the camera on, I doubt it. Have a meeting in person. Zooms and Google meets are the worse, it has taken the basic concept of personal interactions out of daily business. You’re weak for firing someone for not having their camera on!! If you don’t like them not having their camera on, meet them in person!!

I am a 51 year old man who’s been practicing for 25 years. If you don’t want a regular phone call then fine but don’t expect to see me.

Are you mad that he couldn’t visually show you how to fix the McFlurry machine and expected you to read the picture book he sent?

I hate having my camera on because I’m distracted by how bad I look compared to how I think I look.
