This is 110% false. Cars today are significantly nicer and last longer. Average car today lasts 125k miles before problems. In the 1980s it was 50k miles.
Anyone who says otherwise is just an angry old man that remembers shite products to be good because they miss their childhood out of nostalgia.
1980s car

2025 car

How could anyone see the first image and the data showing they would have engine problems at half the miles of the image below and think first is better? Insanity would be the answer.

I think the problem with new cars is the repairs are outrageously expensive and often can’t be done yourself. And there is really no point in keeping them past warranty because of this.
Old cars were simpler, cheaper to fix, and if you know anything about cars you can get them to last a lot longer.

That Acura Integra (aka Honda Civic) is still around after 25 years and works just as good as it did in the photo, a German car won't last beyond 50,000 miles.
I still miss my Integra with a manual transmission and I long for a simple car that is fun to drive without all the unnecessary complexity of a modern car. German cars are the worst for totally unnecessary complexity, plus they're worthless in ~3 years.
That Integra is worth $1,000+ and it will get you to work every day, with or without air conditioning on the way.

Kraft macaroni and cheese. What happened to the cheesy flavor?
McDonald's fries. They say they went back to the old way of making them but I call BS. No way in hell they taste the same as they did back in the day.

I agree with your general premise, but comparing an old Honda to a new BMW is probably as bad an example as you could possibly have picked LOL. Maybe that was intentional? If so, I would just submit that in my experience, inexpensive Japanese cars *in general* were still pretty bad in the 1980s. Hondas were just the best of the bunch. I had an '85 Corolla and that thing was total garbage. My next car was a Buick Century and even with the 2.5L motor it felt like an F-14 fighter compared to that godforsaken Toyota.

What everyone in the thread missed is that both these and dishwashers have had extra layers of Fed regs heaped on them over the years that went a long ways toward making them worse. The electronics are by and large attempts to band-aid the washing performance as much as they are there to help sell the product.
I don't think anyone is missing that. When we got out newer set, we purposefully went with a more simplistic model without all of the big "bells and whistles" for that reason. I think the OP just simply asked what has declined in quality and washers/dryers are one of those things.

I've owned German cars for 30 years (BMW, 3x VW Golf) and my mom's had BMW's her whole life.
I'd say all of them have been excellent as far as durability -- about 8-10 years and 100-150K is the longest I've ever kept one though.
The complaint is simply the little stuff that starts breaking after 8 or so years is expensive to repair.

Anyone defending German cars nowadays probably bought his wife one and doesn't want to feel stupid. I can't imagine any other explanation for such willful blindness to the facts.

We eventually just replaced the original oven from 1975 in our house because my wife thought it was ugly and didn't match the other appliances. It still worked fine though. I'll probably regret getting rid of it.

I bought a $4-5k MSRP GE Cafe gas range in 2015 and the bake igniter has gone out on it 3x. Knobs are junk, burners no longer evenly distribute. I’m considering replacing at 10 years.
My parents have a builder grade whirlpool electric glass cooktop, probably a few hundred bucks in 2003 and it has no issues and never had a repair.
The 2015 French Door LG fridge was replaced at 4 years after failed linear compressor.
2015 W&D have both required repairs.
2015 Bosch DWs both still good.

The "Men in Black" are infiltrating your appliances looking for samples of DNA to potentially tie you to unsolved crimes. So wash your dishes well before placing them in the dishwasher to avoid that.......

I'm not defending them per se, but another poster said they "won't last beyond 50,000 miles" and that is just a ridiculous sweeping statement. They won't last forever and little shite breaks, but the vehicles will last beyond 50,000 miles

We're a Lexus/Toyota/Subaru family though.
