Problems with Electric Bill/Electricity Usage
Posted on 7/15/21 at 6:15 pm

Has anyone dealt with this issue before?
I have electricity through Cleco. We just moved in in September. The electric bill was fairly normal until February when there was a spike. I chalked that up to the ice storm. March was much more in line with what we paid the first few months of living here.
However, in April, the bill states that we used over 9000 kwh. Then in May it was down to about 5800, but that's still high. Then June had us back over 7000. The bills have been as high as $800. The first full month we lived here we used under 2000 kwh.
We live in a approximately 1600 sq ft house. I and everyone I spoke to cannot see any way that we would use that much electricity. I haven't been able to figure out anything that has changed that would have increased our electricity use by 3-5x what it previously was.
If it was an AC issue, it doesn't make since that the usage was higher in April then in May and June.
Could there be something faulty with the electricals of the house?
As far as I can tell, the meter is working normally.
We spoke to a lady at Cleco who agreed that there should be no way we use that much electricity. But she said the meter is working properly. She sent it to billing, and we are not required to pay the latest bill until billing reviews the issue.
I know others that have had problems with Cleco, but not the same problem. However, we called a second time about it and was told that billing is so behind because people keep calling about outrageously high bills. It seems like a Cleco probelm, but I don't know.
Anyone have any idea what the hell is going on?

I’m sure that’ll spark an outrage.

I can't speak for Cleco, but we have Entergy. Our bill this past month was well over $100 more than usual for this time of year, and I have no idea why. Highest bill ever for this house.

Ours is up to 600-800 per month from about 200 per month. It's ridiculous

$400 bill and I was only in my house 14 days last month. The
AC was set at 76 degrees when I wasn't home.

Go read your meter and compare to what they have. (U May want to watch a video on how to read if old analog multiple numbered disk type)
Could be a miss read on their part. Also could be that they only check if quarterly and estimate the two months they don’t read and then u get a big correction when they actually ready if.
My DEMCO bill shows month to month usage graph for the previous 12 months so I can see trends.

I have CLECO but experienced the same. My jan feb mar apri may and jun all fell in line with last years same months. And I always “budget” $550 regardless. So in the spring fall and winter it’s a little surprise extra money. Biggest bill I’ve had since moving into this house 3 years was $450. This bill was $556. About $100 over last yeas jul bill.

Damn I thought mine was high. My house is around 2700 sq ft w/o garage and it was $245. I have entergy. Up from $165 in June. No different schedule being present, using a smart thermostat and it’s rained everyday, so the temperatures have not been crazy. I noticed the fuel price rose on the bill, that’s the only explanation.

Open up your electrical panel and throw a multimeter on the circuits and calculate your usage. Those revenue meters can be faulty. The old analog and the new smart digital meters

Confirm if the meter was actually read each month. Sometimes they skip a month or three, and estimate usage until they get a real reading later.
This happened to us a lot when we had dogs in the yard-scared the meter readers.
It's not an issue now that we've got the smart meter.
Also, go and actually do your own reading on the closing day of your billing cycle.

Lol advice like this is why I love the internet. No need for a power meter when a $50 RMS meter from Home Depot can do the trick!

My Entergy bill that I just got was $175 (2000sq ft home)
I don’t believe I’ve ever had a bill over $150, and the $150 was last month….prior to that I think $125 was my highest bill ever
And I keep my house cold and many lights always on …I’m definitely not green

Unless you pull the wire on each breaker and place the meter in-series with the circuit you cannot measure current with a multimeter. Current and voltage measurements are required to calculate energy being used in watts. A clamp on amp meter probe for the multimeter simplifies the task.

The fuel rate they used is higher than it used to be. They change their rate with fuel prices. That’s part of the reason

You Entergy baws just wait until the 2020 storms make their way on your bill. We ridin’

Meant clamp meter but you know what I meant

3200 sq ft house and last month was 295 with Entergy. 800/monthly for a 1600 sq ft house is absurd. Your ac unit would have to run 24/7 and in that case you have zero insulation. Nothing else in your house uses that much energy

The fuel adjustment is significantly higher than it was a year ago, yes. But that wouldn’t be enough to explain the change in OP’s bill.
For others that have made comments about higher bills - I have noticed my Entergy bill ticking up as well. The fuel adjustment is obviously higher, but does anybody know whether the base rate has gone up as well?
Entergy conveniently leaves the base rate off of the bill and just gives you a total “energy charge.” I can only pull past bills back to August 2019 on the app, but doing some math it appears that the base rate went from $0.059/kWh in 08/19 to $0.069/kWh in 07/21. That’s a 17% increase (!) in 2 years unless I’m looking at this wrong.

Hire a HVAC technician to come in and check to see if your heating elements on your furnace aren’t stuck on. You very well could have your a/c and heat going at the same time. I have come across this many many times.
