About an hour later they approached another woman in a Kroger parking lot in the city’s Hillsboro neighborhood, grabbed the keys out of her hand, got into her vehicle and were gone in less than 60 seconds.

Not with the car, but on foot. Police said the car had a stick shift and the juveniles didn’t know how to use it, so they gave up.

It’s not an unusual scenario anymore as only about 3 percent of cars are sold with manual transmissions today, according to Edmunds, while a recent U.S. News and World Report study found that less than 18 percent of Americans can drive them.

Did ya'll know the highest percentage of cars stolen are automatics...? Because dumb criminals can't drive sticks...

So if you don't want your car stolen, buy a car with a manual transmission..

Yep. My wife is always worried that someone will steal my Jeep when I leave the windows or doors off. I tell her that hardly anyone can drive a manual anymore and I’m not worried about it.

Love my manual. They are getting increasingly difficult to find nowadays though.

I've never owned a vehicle that wasn't a manual until my current car, and the only reason I didn't go manual with it is because a dual-clutch was available.

Yeah, I'm going to need a truck for towing and I'm not looking forward to getting rid of my manual car.

Yep, and 99% of the people who know how to drive a manual these days are not the kind of people that are interested in stealing cars.

Even better is that my reverse is next to first, so there's a non-obvious reverse lockout to disengage on top of knowing how to drive a manual transmission. I park nose-in, just to add degree of difficulty. I've had to show the guy at the detail shop how to defeat it before.

He's probably the guy who's gonna steal my car.

My 16 year old just got his learner's permit and he learned on an automatic at driving school.

Thing is, both mine and my wife's vehicles are standards, and we plan on giving him my old Xterra in 6 months or so when he's ready.

Just got back from having him drive around the neighborhood...he's getting it, but it's rough sledding for a while.

I love driving them, of course, but as a parent of a first time driver I REALLY like them, because when you're learning how to drive on a stick, you don't have extra hands to frick around with a phone. Great way to keep them focused on driving...
