As wildfires threaten communities across the United States, a new betting platform is trying to turn that danger into a market.

Wyldfyre, the website centered on wildfire risk, is raising alarms that disaster speculation would give people financial incentives to commit arson.

Ever wanted to role play a claims adjustor in Southern California? Now you can — with Wyldfyre, the world’s first standalone prediction market dedicated to wildfire risk.

Even more than usual, this summer promises to be hot, dry, and primed for horrifying wildfires throughout North America and beyond; families are already fleeing deadly blazes in California. With mainstream prediction markets like Kalshi shying away from wildfire bets amidst growing scrutiny, it stands to reason that there’s money to be made for anyone willing to lower their scruples even further — every crisis is an opportunity, after all.

quote:

Acknowledging that there are 7,000+ fires each year in California alone, Wyldfyre promises to turn “collective intelligence into better wildfire forecasting — one trade at a time.”

Though Wyldfyre only offers simulated bets at the moment — “paper trading now, real money coming soon,” the website currently declares — the shell site is a potent microdose of the growing prediction market industry.

Without looking too deeply into this, this seems problematic.

And it isn't just that it's gross or encourages people to unscrupulously profit on tragedy.

When money is on the line, there's a certain percentage of people who will cheat. In this case, cheating means placing bets and setting fires. That is a problem... before hitting submit I read the article and they point out this issue as well.

I don't like government getting into things unnecessarily, but they already are involved with gambling, and arson should not be incentivized.

“will my hometown burn due to a wildfire this season?”

Well, shite. Rent is coming up pretty soon. Somebody go get my lighter fluid!

Prediction markets like these need to go away…like yesterday

I'm betting $3.50 that this gets legislated very quickly.

Monte Carlo simulations are a legitimate tool for predicting events of unknown probability. This just takes it a step further by monetizing it. As others have said, it's a bit problematic.
