Was running table saw just a few moments ago and the freaking kickback guard somehow broke, caught the blade, and slung right back at me, hitting me in the knee. I had already powered the saw down, so it wasn’t at full RPM, but that sucker hit fast and hard.

No damage as far as I can tell. Bruising, swelling and maybe need to change shorts.

Just a reminder that no matter how safe you think you are being, be safer.

Did you do your JSA for that work? Did your wife give you a permit?

Gotta stay out of the kickback zone or buy a slider.

ETA curious does your saw have a riving knife?

I burned my thumb when I lit my bong at an odd angle earlier.

This is why I took the kickback guard off my saw while I was putting it together. One less potential projectile.

Subtle OT baller brag...I'm rich enough to buy lumber.

Yes it has a riving knife. I mistyped, it was the blade guard that came off. A piece of the pivot broke and got caught, apparently. There wasn’t even wood in the saw at the time. It’s just a basic Ryobi tablesaw.

I've never, for various reason, owned and regularly operated a table saw with the traditional guard. I don't care for them. I run zero clearance inserts and a splitter on my saw now. I don't stand anywhere in line with kickback, have a dual on/off switches (one on the floor, the other is a bigger paddle switch at kneeish level), and I use push blocks/sticks or jigs for everything I cut. My main work bench serves as an out feed table with another bolt on extension for full sheet goods. I've never felt safer than with the setup I have now, and the only thing I'd like better is a Saw Stop saw. If/when the saw I have now bites the dust, I will get one.

That said, it will always be dangerous.

Nah. The brag isn't the table saw, it is the fact that he can afford wood to cut.

Lol. Nope. It was a stupid honey-do project to make an extra shelf for a cabinet. I used some old scrap MDF. Probably should have sold it.

I use my SS for some work, mainly using sleds and jigs built over the years for a cabinet saw but once you start using a slider you realize how archaic a cabinet saw is.

I’d love one, but I need to build a workshop first. To do that, I’ve gotta move dirt. It’s on my wish list behind new retaining wall, windows, etc… it doesn’t get moved up the list very often.

Blade clearly wasn't installed properly. Who changed the blade last? Because that guy clearly shouldn't be around rotating saw blades.

If/when you replace if you don't have the room or are not willing to spend the money on at least a contractor/hybrid saw seriously consider a track saw instead, it is a lot better/safer option than even the best portable saws for the vast majority of cuts a DIYer will do.
