Everyone keeps mentioning food. It's not food that will be an issue, it's CLEAN water. You can go a month on a few cans of food. You can't go a week without CLEAN water.

Diabetics and others who need a steady supply of perishable life saving medicines would be screwed.

Got plenty. Snow year around on mountains, thousands of streams around town.

Its the easiest place to survive a disaster. Plenty of food, water and natural barriers to keep people out.

A month+ national outage scenario would hit northerners the hardest. Those cities would make the Fall of New Orleans during Katrina look like a Disney production.

If it were a low population effort I and my family would be fine. We could do a month.

But the competition of being in the burbs of Houston makes it a whole new animal; a far more violent one.

The amount of savagery would be biblical in scope and you had better have a coop of people who have the mindset and skill to defend resources. And that isn’t easy to do.

A month ain't shite to Louisiana baws.

i'd be more worried about heavily populated areas that don't get disasters often. Those would be the ones to explode.

And a lot of folks rely on help/supplies from areas that still have power.

For only a month? As long as you have shelter to get to outside of urban areas, it should fairly easily be doable. Wouldn't be fun.

January would be worse, at least for most of the country.

There’s plenty of firewood, fresh water, and game to live off the land, but I probably couldn’t build a heat retaining shelter worth a shite. I could probably do okay by myself but if anyone else depended on me…not so good.

After Katrina some people went w/o power for weeks

Ask them what they did

I was without power for somewhere between 2 and 3 weeks. I remember playing the piano a lot. I got used to the heat, even though I was pretty out of shape at the time. The utter darkness at night was a bigger adjustment than the lack of AC. I set myself up with a handle of vodka and a whole corned beef before the storm, and filled the bathtub up with water. All in all it was a blast.

We have a ton of supplies, and would be fine for a month if everyone left us alone. But I don’t know how I could refuse someone else who was starving. Especially kids. That part freaks me out. It’s hard to think about.

My close friends and I discuss this occasionally, usually when we are a bit sauced. We have one of our group who has land, cattle and a well, about 1 1/2 hours out of the city, and he wants us there. But we have older kids, aged relatives that we wont abandon, so that becomes an issue when extrapolated amongst us but not impossible to handle.
A month with a known end, not an issue we cant handle. Keep 3 months of medication on hand, and a way to capture rain and a bit of chlorine to purify it. Open ended? Pretty much a generous helping of misery.

I guess if I could choose optimum? A camp accessible only by water with a large rain charged cistern, with a sailboat option. Solar powered, attic fan, some gill nets, and a lot of luck.

For a month?

Most critical services have contingency plans for a power failure. Most hospitals, water plants, even power generating plants... have back-up plans that would last for months.

Most people in this country have enough food & water on hand for a few weeks.

The ones who would suffer the most would be the goober-heads who take no thought nor plan for some sort of mid to long term power-outage.

That would the Karens and their sissy husbands/boyfriends...the ghetto thugs...the dope heads & drunks...and the list goes on & on.

Longer term is the issue.

The sick, infirmed, the elderly, the very young would be very vulnerable to terrible outcomes.

Then folks will start getting desperate once the supplies start to run out.

Folks start turning on each other and start to scour the landscape looking for just food & water.

Looting, theft, even murder will start just for simple supplies.

Just a few things though:

Keep a low-profile, aka the gray-man concept.

Don't get on fakebook, twitter, tik-tok, instagram, screwtube...don't tell/talk to neighbors, co-workers, friends even family...bragging about your preps.

What's the old saying? 'Loose lips sink ships.'

The minute the grid goes down, you will be a huge target.

Number one on the list is good ole water. I know, I know, Germans.

*Keep a few cases of bottled water on hand per person.
A case of bottled water should be enough for one person for about a week.

*A couple of Aqua-tainers for drinking water storage.

*Keep a gallon or two of unscented liquid bleach on hand to sanitize drinking water(just know that liquid bleach is good for only about 5-6 months).

*Get a bag or two of pool shock to kill the nasty's in drinking water. Stuff is very caustic though & can be very flammable. Store it outside and in a glass container.

*A countertop, gravity fed water filtration system.
Get one from DoultonUSA or Justwater.me
IDK about the Berkey's, there were quality issues concerning their filters.
Stay away from the big-box filtration systems. Focus on quality.

Some other things:

*Coleman Stoves with several propane bottles.

*Canned foods like chili, tuna/sardines, corned beef hash, soups, stews, beans, hams, potted meat, chicken, roast beef, Chef Boyardee, oat meal...
These are far superior in nutrition & calories compared to those 'food buckets'.

Canned food lasts a long time as well if they are stored properly.

Those 'food buckets' you hear about on the radio are decent but they are loaded down with salts, preservatives and fillers.
Our bodies need good nutrient dense foods to function properly.

Mountain House is decent, Augason Farms is by far superior.
Harmony House, Provident Pantry are good choices.

*Basic medical supplies: triple antibiotic ointment, ora-gel, pain relievers, bandages, antiseptics, anti-biotics like amox...
A good First-Aid kit and a First Aid book.

*An indoor port-a-potty with lots of toilet paper.

I know, Germans, TL...

If the power grid went down for a single day, the country would descend into mass chaos. A month and it would take decades to get back to where we were.
