this year there have been 3 clutches of red bellied woodpeckers in one of the pecan trees, and i've managed to get some good shots of the parents, but i keep missing the fledglings...dissappointing...
Downy woodpeckers have fledged here. You can tell the young ones by their chaotic pecking that has absolutely no rythm to it.
I had red-bellies fledge last year. I haven't seen them again this year, other than just passing through.

wow, you really have a great variety of insects
I'm trying to ID as many as I can this Spring/Summer. I'm pretty close to a creek, have woods, and open fields. Lots of row crops in the area, and I've really started trying not to spray or poison unless there is a definite problem. We have some things blooming pretty regularly, so that helps.

Downy woodpeckers from May...only one clutch in that nest, but I've heard others around...

Very nice! I tried last year to track down both the downies and the red-belly nests/holes. I never found them. I think the downies were across the road, and the others pair were high up in one of the trees just off our property. I didn't have any luck getting a bead on them.

I'll recommend the Audubon app again for bird ID. That, or Merlin. Merlin just takes up a lot more space.

i almost always find nests purely by luck...luckily, the woodpeckers haven't seemed to mind the company, as long as i give them some time to get established before i start hanging around...but those are the only two nests i've found this year...

I do the YouTube rabbit hole deal every now and then with a channel called Leslie the Bird Nerd. She amazes me with how she can build trust with the birds in her area (somewhere in Canada). She hand feeds multiple Blue Jays, as well as other species and gets damn good video of it. Definitely worth checking out to kill some time.
The only thing like that I have managed is this year when I was able to get a Hummingbird to start landing on my hand/finger to drink from a feeder. That was pretty damn cool, though.

that's pretty awesome!
i've seen a few of leslie's videos, it's truly remarkable to me...most of the birds avoid me like the plague

She has to put in so much time to get to that point. Put out food, wait, watch, move closer, more food, wait, watch. It has to take days and days.

i was SO jealous when i saw one of her chickadee videos
they were black-capped chickadees, and i have carolina chickadees here, but these guys would laugh in my general direction if i tried to get them to land on me

Yeah, the Carolina chickadees around me are skittish.
Funny story from a couple years ago. A pair of House Wrens built a nest in an old granite ware bucket I had hanging on the porch for decoration. They had eggs before I noticed them, so I just let them stay. When the young fledged it was chaos, as it always is with those little shits. One flapped about and landed on my hat. The female saw it, flew to the back/top of a porch chair, and commenced to raising hell every time I moved to get it off of me. She flew at me once, and I ducked. I wound up taking my hat off and sitting it in the chair. I backed away slowly. She won that day.

They're bad assess. They will attack wasp nests and eat the larvae with the pissed off wasps flying around. I've witnessed it a few times.
