Highland Park, Forest Park, South Avondale, if you want to be in the city itself. The city of Homewood is your best bet to split the difference, though.

Birmingham is such a great, underrated city. I live there for 10 years, and just moved back to Louisiana. I miss it.
If you are working downtown, I would look in the Highland Ave area, towards Forest Park. This area is on the side of the hill and beautiful. 5 mins from downtown and just up the hill from Lakeview and Avondale.
If you are working further south of the city, Cahaba Heights is a really nice area that is extremely affordable.
As others have mentioned, you can't go wrong with Homewood or Mountainbrook, things just start getting pricey in these areas.
Don't look back, you'll love it in Birmingham.

Bingo. The past 5-7 years have completely revamped the city. Food wise, it is probably one of the most underrated cities in the country. Truly some great spots.
Most of the advice in this thread has been spot on. Homewood, Crestline Park, Avondale, and Forest Park areas all have houses and apartments that should fit the need and are all close enough for anything you'll need to do. There are some good new apartment buildings popping up downtown as well.

Near the Brookwood Hospital, along Lakeshore, Shades Crest, etc. There are some apartments along Columbiana, below Shades Crest, down near Lakeshore, that one of my friends lived in for a couple of years. They weren't swanky or anything, but they had just moved here from out of state and knew they wouldn't be in it long and wanted something for short term living.
I've been in Vestavia for 10 years now and love it. I drive my daughter to school, and then hop on 31 to Red Mountain every morning to get downtown. I can leave my house at 7:20, and even including the time spent going to school and a quick carpool line, I'm at work by 8. It wouldn't be a long commute for either of you from that area. We also have a few friends in our neighborhood that work downtown, and even one at UAB, who says the same.

Friend of mine lived in the apartment complex that was right across Hwy 31 from Brookwood. They weren't too bad and should definitely be in their price range I would think. This was years ago though, so no clue if they are still decent or not.

I live off highway 11 almost to Chelsea. Work in Liberty Park.

It's starting to boom over here neighborhood wise. We live in a neighborhood but have a full acre lot. They are still building in our neighborhood and the builder just started another development further in Chelsea.
Getting to Montevallo from 11 isn't bad if you stay on 11 and skip 65 for as long as possible.
Some friends of ours family has started building a new neighborhood behind Chelsea high school if you have deep pockets. Like 500k+ easy

Yeah I took notice of that this year. She was working at Forest Oaks Elementary in Chelsea but did not like it.
I helped my upstairs neighbor at the apartment move into his new home he built out there. It was unbelievable how many open lots and new neighborhoods were out that way.

Look at the area around the bham crossplex. It's beautiful.

Up until recently, yeah. I had the apartment bottom floor at the very edge of the woods over looking the parking lot.
