Not sure if this is the correct board, but I didn't necessarily think it fit into "travel".

Anyway, my SO and I may be moving to Birmingham in the next 6 months or so and wanted to see what the "good" areas were to look in. Probably interested in renting as the final goal is to move back to ATL in 2-3 years. I know that downtown has picked back up and I know that Mountain Brook is nice as well but didn't know if it were suitable for a younger couple (mid-upper twenties).

Anybody have any suggestions of where to look? No preference of apartment vs house vs condo vs etc. Max rent would be ~$1600ish. I appreciate the time and input. Happy Friday.

Mtn Brook is certainly nice but from what you are saying its too pricey.

Vestavia Hills,Homewood and Hoover have more options. Where will you be working? US 280 is a disaster so if you are working downtown don't even think about looking out that direction.

Hoover, Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills. The city itself is kind of a shithole but there are very nice burbs.

People shite on Alabama here, but overall, Alabama probably has more nice towns than the maybe 4-5 in Louisiana.

My Brother in law lives here and BHam is an amazing city now. It had so many top restaurants parks. You will enjoy it if you explore it.

Mid-upper 20s and sounds like no kids?

I'd look to rent in Crestline Park (somewhat pricey - not anything near MB, Vestavia) or Homewood if you're OT baller rich. Crestwood if you're not OT baller. Avondale if you're edgy. Southside if you're REALLY edgy. It also depends somewhat on what part of town you work in. I worked downtown and lived downtown and loved it when I lived in Birmingham. There are a ton of nice apartments down there (Pizitz, TJ Tower, 20-Midtown in CBD/Midtown) plus some on the fringes of downtown (Park35, 29 Seven). If you're not necessarily deadset on the fancy amenities and just want an basic/relatively cheap apartment, H2 Real Estate is constantly renovating apartments in Avondale and Southside with prices of ~$800 a month for 2/1 type apartments.

ETA: This answer changes greatly if you have kids or work south of 459.

ETA2: Answer would also change if you planned on staying long term and purchasing a home.

It's a fair statement. Birmingham proper is not that great...

I've spent years of my life there

I had to click it to find what the hell Bham was. I thought you were moving out of the country.

Lived there between 2000-2006. Homewood, Vestevia Hills, Hoover are all nice. Mountain Brook is awesome but is pricey. Pelham and Alabaster are other options. Further away from Downtown. We lived in Alabaster because I was young and OT poor at the time.

Didn't realize how much I would miss living there. Been 11 years since moving back to Baton Rouge and we still miss our time living there.

Birmingham has improved significantly in the last five years. Downtown new green parks, museums, some top restaurants in the country, new condos. THey are attracting young business professionals and they are flocking to live downtown. It's amazing how far it has come. Not to mention the ballpark for the Barons is right in the middle of it all. shite, they even have great breweries if you're a craft beer fanatic.

Ten years ago I would not be caught after dark any where near downtown. It has improved leaps and bounds since then. I left in 2009 and said I would never return. After leaving LSU, Baton Rouge lost it's appeal and I returned to Bham towards the end of 2016.

Yeah people shite on Birmingham here but then bitch about how shitty BR and NOLA are.

You won't rent in Homewood, Mountain Brook, or downtown for $1600 unless it's small.

It really depends on where you will be working.

What years? Birmingham isn't the same city it was even 5 years ago.

Do not listen to all these trolls trying to trick you about where to live in B'ham. You need to be looking at these areas:

Roebuck
Center Point
Pratt City
Gate City
Fairfield
Zion City
East Lake

You'll love any of these areas. But my personal recommendation to you would be Tarrant City.

That's about when I left. I mean don't get me wrong, the downtown area was getting some improvements that I suppose have made the city better. I can recognize that.

But still, my comment wasn't really meant to be an insult to the area, just the city compared to the nice suburbs. I told my gf (now wife) we could stay there, she was in school at Samford. She said no way.

I'm not gonna hate on Bham. It was very nice, but there wasn't a ton to do compared to Nola. The culture is a bit different, people seem to settle down much earlier in life and IMO it shows.
