I recently moved to Birmingham with my wife and kids. We live in Homewood and love it. There is plenty to do and the area is really safe. Only issue with Homewood is that many of the houses are smaller, older and expensive. Being in your 20’s with no kids, avoid the further suburbs like Vestavia Hills and Hoover.
Crestline is another area to look at. It’s basically the poor section of mountain brook so you can get a nice older house in a safe neighborhood.
Also definitely stay away from the 280 corridor if you have to come into Birmingham for work. Traffic is terrible.

I lived in bham for 2.5 years...it's not near as bad as outsiders make it out to be.
If you're only staying 2 years, don't live in mountain brook. That's where the rich people live/retire so in your situation it wouldn't make sense to throw money down the drain when your dollar cna go a lot farther elsewhere. Where are you working? If downtown, some of the other areas like lakeview would be good. If not downtown, hoover/vestavia is great.

And anyone from around here could tell you that out of that list Fairfield is not even close to being the worst shithole. In fact, it's probably among the best places to live if you had to pick one from that shitty list.

Alabama is underrated. Find an area that has recently developed in the last 40 years and they are quite nice. What attracts me most is the beautiful streams and rivers they have. Louisiana doensn't have shite for a nice place to go swimming on a hot summer day.

Yup, this guy gets it.
I will add to that, 65 is a nightmare the majority of the time so if you work downtown you want to avoid it if you can.
We live in Pelham, out a bit, but we wanted more house, more land, etc for cheaper. The commute isn't terrible since my wife and I both work early schedules, we beat the traffic each way.

My wife is from Hoover. I've been to some of the nice areas on the west side (Ensley, Fairfield, Wylam). I'm not shitting on the entire area but I'm not a fan of the city proper. The murder rate is right there with Nola and BR

Honestly, even in Atlanta, I usually hear people go "oh we loved Birmingham"
It's a really good town for its size.
Among GA, AL, MS and LA I think it's got a strong argument for being #2 behind Atlanta. Of course, there is almost no competition when you're talking about Montgomery, Jackson, BR, etc., but nonetheless, it's solid.

It's beautiful. Move to Shelby Co. in the neighborhoods not far off Hwy 280. Look into neighborhoods like Brook Highland, Greystone, and Heatherwood. You'll be amazed.
ETA- traffic on 280 is terrible, and always so on Fridays. If you don't work downtown, I would still consider it.

Yeah it definitely wasn't bad, most of the negativity I see or hear about it is from this website, which isn't shocking in the least bit.
I will say I would never want to move back, and I was fortunate to have a great living situation, but yeah it absolutely wasn't bad at all. Lots of fun things to do for someone OP's age range.

I've lived here for about 4 years now. My wife and I love living in Birmingham. We bought a house in Crestwood a year and a half ago and love the area. Before we bought the house we were renting a townhouse in the area behind Grandview Hospital (Acton Park). Our rent there was $1600 per month.
Birmingham has more breweries than most anywhere else I've been lately. There are a ton of great local restaurants to eat at. Top Golf opens today. The city is definitely improving. Basically you get to enjoy the benefits of city life without the traffic of ATL

I lived there for almost half a decade. Loved it, but wanted to get back home.
Where will each of you be working? Age? Kids in school?
I lived in Highland Park near downtown and loved it.
Property taxes are sky high in Mtn. Brook if you are buying, but worth it for the schools.

Ensley will be the next hipster neighborhood behind Woodlawn, but no way to move there.
If only moving to Bham for two years, (UAB Resident in med school is my guess), then I would look at:
downtown condos, Highland Park, Forrest Park, Crestwood, Crestline, or Homewood.
and if you and your SO are basic as frick, go check out Hoover and find a generic apartment complex off of I-65.
You'll love Bham. so much to do. I found it as a great change from Louisiana, while its the South, its different than Louisiana certainly. People will love your Louisiana cookin for sure.
Avoid Hwy 280 or I-65 South after 4pm.
