Midland is the last bastion of the American dream.

That’s awful about the water. Why can’t you even wash your car with it? How do they shower and bathe?

I’m from San Angelo and that’s the most accurate way to describe it.

Raise your family in Midland and raise your hell in Odessa.

My dad graduated from OHS in the 60s and left with no intention of ever moving back. It was awful in the 80s when I was out there and when I went back for a funeral a few years back it was even more desolate. Trash everywhere… stuck in fences, trees, etc. Now that was moreso Odessa than Midland.

Midland seems to be trying to make something of themselves and be a bit cleaner of a town, but it would take something like x4 my current salary with a housing allowance and my some sort of airline benefit to even think about it.

2 important things to know about Midland/Odessa. All the pretty girls are hiding behind the trees and there’s a Stonehenge on the university campus.

I said that too...3 years later I was back.

Encourage you to rent your home and rent there for a couple of years.

What say OT lounge on Midland?

I was considering a promotion within my company, which was in Midland. My boss (from Dallas who lived in Midland for 5 years as a Director) told me I do NOT want to live in Midland. He created a new position for me.

Nice thing about Midland is that it’s one of the most conservative towns in Texas. But it’s in the western part of the state so you’ll be pretty far from family

Jena is about a 9h 30 min drive to Midland. It’s quite a distance

Historically, Midland was where the execs and bankers lived and Odessa the roughnecks. Similar to Tyler / Longview.

You may be surprised by this. I too am from CenLa and thought the same thing. It was not until I left Louisiana that I realized how much I like it. Oddly enough, In addition to family, I missed the lush vegetation that is prevalent in the south.

One other word of advice, if you have a lucrative job offer, there is undoubtedly a reason they want to pay you that much to live there…figure out why they want to pay you so much. Some here have said the cost of living is decent in west Texas. With all of the activity in the Permian basin, I’ll bet the cost of living is going to knock your socks off compared to what you spend in Jena.

I find it hilarious that people from South La are constantly trashing CenLa & North La. Anyone that lives in BTR nor Nola can’t talk

cost of living is high out there - think the competition for schools/daycare is fierce as well. get on those waiting lists early, folks
