Anyone sick of the media narrative right now about how are these guys going to play this weekend after what happened to Hamlin? What about their mental health? These poor guys sacrificing their lives every play of every game, wah wah wah

Nobody has the balls in the media to mention how much money they're making playing the game and if they wanna quit because there's too much at risk, they should do so. There's thousands of people that would sign up immediately and take their place. I'm sick of them not putting everything out there on the table in this discussion. Offshore baws get paid higher than similar jobs because of the higher risk of injury/ death. It's their decision to make. That's a real dilemma. Getting paid millions to play a sport where you're a national hero basically after a freak accident isn't the same and coddling these super athletes by the media is pathetic

1) it is dangerous. Look at the CTE studies. Plus a ton of those guys need joint replacements later on.
2) some guys don’t make all that much. Most people only play a few years. It’s not like they are all getting 20 million a year.
3) I do realize they are choosing this (some of them over other pro sports), so it is their choice.

I think they’re being a bit over dramatic about the whole thing, but it is a dangerous sport and the NFL can be a cold and ruthless organization towards players. Very few players get the royalty treatment that some of the top players get.

The people really risking their lives, statistically, are their wives and girlfriends.

Counterpoint:

Damar Hamlin was a 6th round draft pick. He is only in his 2nd year in the nfl, so he is not vested & will not receive lifetime healthcare unless he plays into his third season.

His salary this year: $825,000 with $160,476 in signing bonus

I don't know about you, but I don't think $1M pre-tax is enough to survive the rest of your life, especially with the likely medical expenses he will have

Obviously what you're saying applies to the big earners but a lot of NFL players are earning minimum pay

They have beat it into the ground. Lots of professions have dangers to life and limb and get paid way less. Life is a risk/reward proposition. Go play flag for $50 a game then or go drive a cab in NOLA and get back with us.

He has to pay taxes on that, his agent gets a cut, other people who work for him or represent him get a cut, he has to pay for cost of living like anyone else. A lot of people see these big numbers but don’t realize how far it really gets you. It dries up almost immediately.

I have compassion for a guy that receives a life impacting job related injury, not so much for an NFL player being considered “underpaid,” particularly when that is likely his only marketable skill

Nope. Haven't watched. Saw the replay, noted it and went about my life.

I'm having trouble worrying about NFL players earning almost 1 million per year as minimum pay and it not being enough. That seems to be more of a systemic issue of them being terrible with money, than it actually...not being enough. If you ride the bench for 3 years at minimum pay, you should never have to worry about money again.

It applies to all NFL players, regardless of their level of pay.

Side note: the NFL will 100% take care of Damar Hamlin if he cannot play/earn a living outside of football. It's only good PR.

Nowhere in my post did I say he was "underpaid"

If it was so awful, we wouldn't ALL say "sign me up."

We would, though. We would.

Yes, you're going to have injuries playing in the NFL. Even if they're not acute injuries, I would wager every one of those guys feels it in their bodies as they age. Still worth the cash exchange.

Lol, my point exactly. Poor guy having to divy up $825K to play a sport most people/fans would swap places with him in a heartbeat

Way to ignore the most important part of my post.

How about you go receive the injury this kid just got, and then I'll hand you $500K and tell you to survive the rest of your life on it, including having to pay your medical bills?

God, some of you are so out of touch it's insane
