I would hope most people understand this all by themselves. It's not the dollar amount, it's that the giver just obligated OP go go spend $200 to use their gift so that the giver could feel generous and classy.

I don't what understand what you mean by 'random'? You say it's for your birthday, so is it random in the sense that it's someone you don't talk to that frequently?

I see it as the equivalent of picking up a decent bottle of wine or round of drinks for your and your wife, if he happened to see you two together while dining out. I have a feeling you would think that was nothing but simply a nice gesture.
Personally, I'd be flabbergasted that any "out-of-state friend/business associate" knew, much less remembered my birthday enough to perform any gesture no matter small. In other words, odd gripe.

I don't read the OP as being rude or ungrateful - he stated so explicitly at the end of the post. I think he's just saying that a $50 gift card to an expensive restaurant is not so much a gift - as it is an invitation to take yourself out to a meal that will still be expensive even after the $50 is spent. Of course it should still be appreciated, but I see the OPs point.

You don't have to spend $200 and it certainly doesn't obligate you to go. The next time you plan a nice dinner though, hey, we have $50 off if we go here.

No they didn't... If you can't afford to supplement or just don't want to, then pass it on to someone else or sell it online. They probably thought that was a place the OP already goes to, so that would offset the cost of one of their visits.

Projection of what exactly? IMO giving a gift card is lazy. Giving a gift card for a fifth of the value of what it takes to eat at that place is both lazy and conceited. It's not projection if I'm spelling it out.

I'm not going to go run up a $200 tab at Ruth's Chris on a random Tuesday night just because I got a $50 gift card... but I will hold on to it and next time I'm going out to a nice dinner, that's $50 less I'll spend.

No they don’t. He could just sit at the bar and order drinks and dessert with his SO.
There is a local very nice steak place here that is known for one of their desserts. Not unusual at all to go to their bar area and just order drinks and dessert.

You obviously dont receive gifts very often, otherwise you would have a stack of these gift cards that would add up to covering your entire meal...
