We just moved into a new house, which is great except there's a smell of sewer gas coming from one of the bathrooms. What could be causing this? How screwed am I?

Is this happening when you turn on the hot water? If so, you may have to flush your hot water tank and replace the cathode. That's not a big deal.

No it's pretty much all the time.

Seal around the toilet is comprised
RE install toilet with new wax rings and RE caulk
Any plumber can do this for 1-2 hours, just get a new toilet while you at it

Sounds like a seal is bad somewhere.

Is this a bathroom that gets used? The sink trap may have dried out letting the gas in.

Are you on a city sewer system or a septic tank? If you have a septic system, it may be plugged or malfunctioning.

This is also an incredibly easy DIY job. I’m replacing one of the wax rings in my house today. Check YouTube for instructions.

Maybe the p trap under the sink has dried out if it hasn’t been used in a while.

I want to upvote this but because of the new toilet thing I can't. Everything else is truedo.

Very good answer. If you want to do it yourself, it is not difficult, I'd recommend get the oversized wax ring and toilet shims if you have noticed a "wobble" when on the toilet.
If you have a sink or tub that you rarely use (like months of no use) in that bathroom, run the water first there and see if the smell goes away. Occasionally the water in the trap of a seldom used drain will evaporate enough to compromise the seal and allow gasses through.

Almost always a bad wax ring under the toilet. Toilets are the only plumbing fixtures without a p trap.
