Most people I know don’t have landlines anymore but like I said she didn’t even know to dial 911 and she doesn’t know anybody’s phone numbers. I doubt she had a cell phone but I’m not sure.

And why was the kid in the bathtub when the mom was asleep?

As I read it, I think the mom is the one that was in the tub. It’s his brother-in-law’s “baby sister” (so his sister-in-law?) but sounds like she’s an adult.

I may have misunderstood, though.

That’s why i put a white board on the refrigerator and explained to my kids to call 911 and tell them exactly what is on the white board.

I also have run a drill for a fire and what they should do to get outside.

I wish more parents would get on board with that

No, the mom collapsed in the tub while her two kids were watching tv. My BIL has a lot of brothers and sisters and she was the youngest of the siblings.

You still have a landline?

Terrible to hear.

I'm going to make sure to ramp up efforts to make sure my son knows these things. He knows how to call my phone using Alexa, it uses his mom's phone list, but he can say either call daddy or selfish dickhead.

Even if you do teach them it's smart to leave info like that on the fridge door or somewhere they can easily find it because you never know how they will react in a scary situation like that where they can't think and forget it.

In some areas law required that 911 service still work on landlines even if you had your phone service disconnected. I have not had a active account or phone number for more than a decade, but keep the phone plugged in for potential use in a emergency. Until recently there was no quick way to locate a cell phone if the person that dialed was unable to speak. With the landline just pick up and dial, and they instantly know where the phone is.

i was just watching my niece (4) and nephew (7) this afternoon. Nephew knows to call 911 or tell Alexa / siri for an emergency and his address. thank goodness their grandfather is a retired fireman and taught them even if their parents haven't.

As for me: I remember my mother's, siblings', neighbors', pastor's, and lawyer's numbers among others.

frick that’s horrible. The 2 year old won’t remember it, but as the 7 year old gets older, I pray she doesn’t carry the weight of this her whole life. Praying for the family.

Likely the damage would have already been done even if the little girl knew who to call. If they live out of town it would take an ambulance 15- 20 minutes to get there, and her situation sounds like she needed someone there within 5 minutes.

Unfortunately it seems in this case the outcome would have been the same.
