Anybody done it recently? My dad turns 60 in 2018 and I'd love to take him out and stay a couple of nights and play Pebble and one of the other courses in the area.

Any recommendations, info on how to maximize the trip, approximate cost etc... would be appreciated.

Played Pebble, Spyglass, and Spanish Bay several years ago. Spanish Bay was my favorite. Stayed at the Inn at Spanish Bay and it was awesome.

Aren't there "stay and play" packages?

It may get you a break on green fee? Which I've heard $350+ to a thousand dollars.

Keep reading that golf has taken a downturn in annual rounds. Don't know if that reached Pebble Beach yet?

we didn't stay on property but golf was 495 if I remember right. Get a caddy for every 2 people. The caddy will carry 2 bags. And they will bring a lot to it. Don't go there worried about cash. Spend the money it's worth it.

But if money is an issue, consider a trip to Bandon Dunes. Much cheaper and the courses are equally amazing minus the obvious tradition of Pebble. Then again as I type this i realize you said your dad was 70. No golf carts at bandon, so that may be an issue.

Played Pebble last year. Wife and I were on our honeymoon in Sonoma and she surprised me with a round at Pebble for my wedding present. Without a doubt the most enjoyable 18 holes I've ever played

It may have been the slowest round I've ever played, but if you just sit back, relax and enjoy it, it's worth every penny. After your round, go sit on the patio at the restaurant overlooking 18 green. We sat by the fire pit for about 4 hours drinking, eating, and talking to random people. It was great.

The first 4 holes at Spyglass may be the best opening holes in all of golf. The rest of the course is ok. It seems like every hole is dead up hill from 6 on. Spanish is a fun track. Stay to watch the bagpiper at sunset. Avoid Poppy Hills.

It was $495 per. Stay at the Inn at SB, not at the PB Lodge. The Inn is less expensive by a little bit and I think has better atmosphere. For sure get the caddie for 2. And work on getting the slice under control. That course will kill you if you are losing everything to the right. Its like you go counter clockwise and the trouble - ocean, roads, OB is invariably on your right.

This. Be prepared to play a 5 hour plus round though. Be patient and take in the beautiful scenery.

Went with my dad a couple of years ago. Approximately $500 a round at Pebble Beach. Most amazing scenery and definitely a trip to remember! We stayed at Pebble Beach and the accommodations were nice, but it's not a place that I feel we stayed in the room a lot, so if one of the other resorts is cheaper then go for it!

I played Pebble and Spy Glass last week. There are two ways to do it. The guaranteed way is to book a room(2 night minimum - estimated $1000.00/ per night) or roll the dice and call at 7am the day before you want to play. I've done it both ways, but the caddy's say its pretty hit or miss to get on without a room. Pebble was $495 and Spyglass was $395. Spyglass is probably a better course, but nothing beats the feeling of getting to chunk it around Pebble.

Just looked, and it's $525 right now, not including cart or a caddy.

Your post is spot on. We went this summer and I agree.

Spyglass plays longer than its yardage. Only down hill holes were the par threes it seemed. Pebble is my favorite course and I've played all of the Bandon courses.

Spend the money to play pebble. You will have zero regrets. One day your dad will be gone but you'll have the memory of his enjoyment at Pebble with you the rest of your life.

Honestly, if you don't do it I suspect you'll regret it. Money comes and goes.
I am so glad I pulled the trigger and took my Dad to the Masters. Never seen him that happy in my life, and he passed suddenly almost two years ago.

I can't overstate the value of the memory.

Totally non-golf related recommendation. If you're flying, fly in to San Francisco and drive down the coast road (1?). Stay in the area a couple extra days and visit Big Sur and / or Monterey. Really nice area; it will make you understand why some people love California.
