Dumb question of the night…. How do y’all know from looking at the picture how much of that is chlorine vs smoke from the fire?
That’s actually a fair question. It looks like a green tinged cloud to me but it’s possible that a lot of it is smoke and that the reflections from the fire/lights at night make it look worse.
But keep in mind you’re talking about a product with an IDLH (immediately dangerous to life & health) concentration of 10 ppm.

Calling it now. Less than a gallon spilled, nothing left the site.

Careful. The OT wants bodies stacked.

Chlorine gas is water soluble IIRC. Water changes it into hydrochloric acid which can be diluted by more water. If you are in the higher concentration areas, just get in the shower.
eta not ammonia.

Cover up the bright green grass at the bottom of the picture and it just looks like smoke from a fire

That’s a lot of mean green

A lot of that looks like smoke. What’s unknown is how much uplift the fire and resulting smoke is giving to the chlorine. And no, this isn’t something that happens often.

I’m a little shaken up because that picture looked bad, and because I have multiple friends (and coworkers) who work at the site.
Maybe I got carried away. I hope that’s the case. But if you think that means I “want bodies stacked” you can frick right off.

I think it’s been 7 years or so since the last big chlorine event at DOW. That one was a result of massive power failure

How bad will this impact traffic over the river tomorrow?

I used to work there myself & have a few buddies still there who are loaders on the Olin side (caustic, chlorine, methanes & solvents)

In all seriousness, I did put a couple of jars outside so I can trap the chlorine and use it in my pool.
