You must have made a hell of a deal on flights

Neither, both are vanilla married ways to travel.

Personally, me and Mrs. Gar love cruises. We kinda think of it as a resort anyway because a great resort hotel you wouldn't leave. If we wanted to go on a sight seeing/culture trip we would do that separately. We just love that everything is paid up front and we can be as busy with shite to do or relaxed on a chair as we want. The extras on the boat really only add up if you let it, but you can easily have a good time without spending a dime. If you do the Norwegien ship out of New Orleans then they usually offer free alcohol for the week as a promotion when you book the cruise (that's what we did for our honeymoon). If you want a classier crowd stay away from carnival, but other then that you get very much a middle/upper class crowd.

Hope your wife isn't pregnant when you go. Ziki virus is showing up in the Caribbean. Be safe.

A cruise is good for your first time, as it will enable you to visit 3 to 4 locations(or possibly more depending on length of cruise).

I've been on 4 cruises and the ports either suck or you don't have enough time to enjoy the ones that are good. To me, a cruise is about being on the ship and not so much about the destinations. Personally, I'd be happy if I never had to go on a cruise again. I would much prefer spending that money on a resort, where I get free drinks or there not being an issue with me buying alcohol to bring to my room. Can't bring your own alcohol on a cruise, or buy it in port and expect to drink it on the ship. They want you to spend a week paying $10 for a watered down drink.

It completely depends on what you want. A cruise is a fun way to see a few new places and decide if you want to come back to one for a longer stay. That's what me and my wife have done.
A resort(all-inclusive or don't bother) is the best way to totally relax and do basically nothing for a week. There is still plenty to do, but you don't feel like you ever HAVE to do something.

There are plenty of ports that you stay at all day, and some even over night.
A cruise is WAY cheaper than an AI resort and most of the major lines have drink packages for around $50bucks a day.
Watered-down?? You must have been on a bad ship or had a bad bartender, those drinks will knock you out!

Don't know that you need a car the whole time though. You could rent a villa in Red Hook bay on St Thomas then fill most of your week taking chartered sailboats out of the harbor. Renting a jeep on St John would make for a great day, but that's about all I'd do. Driving on St Thomas is not recommended.

That's true, I'd rather have one (a rental Jeep) sitting at the house but cabs work there too as a back up.
St. John USVI is stupid good.

What are the best bars and restaurants close by? We will be there for about a week in June.
Trip Advisor has a list of restaurants, ranked by posters. We ate at El Muelle Restaurant Last year and plan on returned in two weeks for a meal. One of the nice things about Tripadvisor is you can save places that look good to you prior to the trip and they will display on a map with your location. Makes it real handy when you are out wondering the streets. Playa is a really safe city.

We went to St Thomas for our honeymoon, and in the 12 days we visited St John 4 full days. Pretty much if we hadn't drank too much the night before and were up early we took a cab to the ferry and headed over to the smaller island. Our favorite day was one where we simply hiked 45 minutes into Honeymoon Beach and chilled. Crazy beautiful. Make it back for a few drinks before the last ferry.
