I see yellowfin also stayed at El Faro . What are the best bars and restaurants close by? We will be there for about a week in June.

What other things would you recommend doing in that area? Would like to do one of the ruin tours and check out one of the xcaret type places. Will have kids in age range of 9-4 with us also.

I would always say a resort. Getting on the cruise ship is cheap but the amount of money you spend once on the boat can escalate quickly. Much more bang for your buck at a resort with multiple options. Went to cabo a few months back for about 1800 for two people and could not have had a better time.

yep. Do all 3 on Cozumel. Water is much cleaner on the island.

Cruise or Resort?

Neither.

Pick a good island, do VRBO.com and truly experience the island.

We went to Turks and Caicos (Stayed at Seven Stars) and had a great time. T&C has amazing beaches and water and very good restaurants. We didn't hit the bar night scene up though.

I was there in October, the beaches and water are awesome, but there wasn't much in the way of night life and most things are not in walking distance. It's very expensive ($75 for a case of Corona.) I liked it but would not go back, I would choose somewhere new to try. I stayed at the Royal West Indies.

The view from my room.

TCI definitely is expensive. However, the more expensive islands tend to be cleaner and feel much safer. We've been to Providenciales, North Caicos and Middle Caicos several times and always felt that we could travel freely on the islands and be safe. This is definitely not true of all Caribbean islands.

This is true, very safe and didn't have anyone try to sell me something or peddal any goods to me.

VABuckeye,

We rented a house on North Caicos over Christmas and New Years. Will be hard to top.

We are past the nightlife age; was perfect.

Do not go on a cruise. You are only floating through the region and can not experience any true Caribbean culture by stopping at ports to walk through all the tourists souvenir shops and maybe some cheesy excursion with 100 other rednecks.

Avoid Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Aruba, St Thomas, and Nassau and Grand Bahama.

Consider checking VRBO and see if you can find a house with its own private pool. I recommend Grand Cayman, St Bart's, Turks and Caicos ,Barbados and St Lucia as islands I have stayed a week or longer. If you look into St Lucia, check out Anse De Chasanet resort. Will not be disappointed.

I still want to hit Martinique, Dominica, St Vincent and Grenadines, Anguilla and Mustique at some point.

I agree with the general consensus is to do a resort and not a cruise.

We did a cruise once when we were younger and enjoyed it, but it's much more fun to stay in a resort or rent a house and be able to spend some actual time in an area enjoy yourselves.

Have you considered Roatan? We rented a house on the beach last year and really enjoyed it. Look into West Bay if you have not already.

ETA: This isn't where we stayed, but it was right next door and we ate breakfast there every morning. The wife and I may rent a little bungalow and leave the kids at home this summer. You can't beat the prices and it was a really nice little place.

I'm planning a big trip to go to a resort in the future so this thread helps.

I was thinking Cancun and staying at the Ritz due to spending some Marriott points I have laying around.

How expensive is the Virgin Islands compared to Cancun? For instance a poster talked about at his vacation a case of corona costing $75.

Just trying to get some ideas.

Watch out for the Zika Virus, I am planning a trip to the St. John as well and keeping an eye on how this progresses.

quote:

The Virgin Islands Department of Health confirmed today, a case positive for Zika virus in a 42 year old woman with no history of previous travel during the incubation period of the virus.
