I did the cruise thing several times and one of the stops was Aruba. I decided that I would like to spend at least a week there for vacation in the future. Cruises make stops on island resorts but you really don't get to enjoy much due to time constraints. I say Resort.

We liked it...more than likely will go back for another long weekend this summer.
walking distance from more restaurants than you could eat at in 2 weeks
fun bar next door
starbucks one block away
walk to ferry to Cozumel
short cab ride to Puerto adventuras for fishing
xcaret close
it's a quick cheap thurs to monday trip for us. I can drop the kids off at school in the morning(lafayette) and be on the beach by 2PM same day
ETA: we don't do big all inclusive resorts so I can't help with those

man it looks familiar but we probably ate and drank at 20 places in 4 days

It's worth every dollar. It's all inclusive and everything is top notch. I think the year we went the Spa was voted as the #1 spa in Mexico.

There are some great resorts in Riviera Maya that are just a short cab ride away form Playa. We stayed at Secrets Maroma Beach last time we went and it was awesome. The swim up suite was the shite.
