Have to stay below Va if flying in that kind of unstable air.
Details in the article are sparse but seem to be in line with your guess.

Was it a V-tail Bonaza? Aka Doctor Killer.
Beautiful plane but I'll never trust them.

nothing wrong with the plane

Holy shite it was a Doctor Killer. Those planes have issues with breaking apart mid air.
You never hear about Commanders or Grummans crashing though.

What type of issues cause these planes to break up in mid air? That is my absolute worst nightmare

over stressing/g-ing, they don’t just come apart in a steady state one g envelope

It was flying 7000 ft IFR. It might have gone into a thunderstorm that was a bit more than the plane could handle for some reason.

I once worked for a lawyer in Austin that had been a Marine Corps Ace in Korea and did aviation PI cases. He made me promise to never fly IFR until I was flying for a living.

Over-stressing the g-limits.
The plane can only handle so many +/- gs. Thunderstorms with large up/down drafts is all it takes.
Always fly 20+ miles away from a thunderstorm in GA aircraft.
