KATC

quote:

Acadian Ambulance officials say that one person is dead as a result of the crash.

According to the FAA, the plane was a Piper Cherokee (PA-28). No word yet on the victim’s identity. The tower stood at 1,800 feet and was being rented by KAJN radio.

Baw should have studied his sectional and been aware.

I did my checkride out of Gonzales and 92.3’s gigantic tower is pretty hard to not notice.

True, it's not like they move around.

Looked like he hit a guy wire. For an 1800 foot tall tower those wires may have branched far out.

Wiki list tallest US structures (i.e. mostly radio towers)

list has one in Wisconsin that collapsed in March 2011, then it's replacement collapsed in Dec 2011.

must have given up after that

No. It is something like 60 or 70 feet taller than either of the original WTC towers or the Sears Tower (frick you, I refuse to call it the Willis Tower) and is something like a foot or two taller than the new WTC tower.

It's REALLY fricking tall and it's not even close to the tallest broadcast tower. Towers are tall. That's why we say that they tower over things.

Back in ‘83, while working on a scaffolding crew at the Waterford III nuclear plant, me and two friends witness a similar accident.

Dude was in a biplane crop dusting some cane fields and was getting really close to the guy wires of a tall radio tower.

On his last pass, his left wing clipped a guy wire, sending his plane into a helicopter spin into the ground. It seemed to happen in slow motion in front of us. The plane hit the ground without an explosion. Lucky dude, he survived with only a broken shoulder.

That's what make the Burj Kkalifa at 2,700 ft. all the more incredible. It looks like something built 200 years before its time. It's the only thing that exist today that imagined would exist when I was a little boy watching the Jetsons.

That's awful about that accident.

There’s one or two off river road that are taller if I’m not mistaken

The old 92.3 radio station out of LaPlace used to tout that they broadcasted from the highest structure in Louisiana.

ETA, Of course I see the OP mentions that, but I thought it was in LaPlace not Gonzales.
