What if she was using the phone for additional radar or ads-b info?

So even with access to ground based radar they still flew directly into the cell?

This getting worse and worse the more facts that come out.

To pilots it’s our office and everyday life. A brain surgeon vibing to music in the OR is a distraction. A text is not going to distract you from an obvious red echo on the radar return is what I was mainly getting at there.

I don't agree with the music part, but the rest will be conveniently ignored by the armchair pilots in here.

I think we can all agree that with the benefit of hindsight, there was dangerous weather in the area that should have been avoided. You can argue about who made that decision and why, but the weather had been in the area for days and supposedly ATC gave them a weather warning beforehand that they acknowledged and kept going. I'm sure they thought they could find a gap, sometimes when you risk it, you don't make it. They picked a bad time and plane to risk it.

It’s a “denominators matter” situation. Unless we know how many other pilots and flights have flown into similar situations and come out just fine, it is really pointless to cast judgment.

Ground-based radar can be delayed by several minutes or more. It’s not live radar.

Yes your arguments are getting worse. Best just to stop.

The side step east on my flight last night dealing with the same system was only because one bolt of lightning showed itself and lit the clouds up. Granted I was coming in after dark not that not seeing shite pitch black vs soupy white makes a difference in not being able to see shite. The onboard radar had everything painted green and smooth sailing. Granted I’m flirting with yellow returns based on flight aware in the low 30s vs a super cell building up to 45000, there are times just go with your gut which takes experience especially when dealing with embedded shite.

Yes, let’s not question the possible role a 20-year-old texting, TikToking Learjet_gurl might have played into the plane flying directly into deadly weather. I mean, only an incel would even bring up such an irrelevant thing.

If only these pilots had near the experience arguing and posting on the internet they'd be in the Bahamas rn.

It's a huge stretch.

Hard to imagine people doing this.

Pretty surprised we do not know all of the occupants by now given the media attention to this story

At the press conference they said DNA testing will be involved, so they don't have a timeline for releasing the info.

However, the Palm Beach Post wrote:

quote:

A married couple and two toddlers were among the nine killed in the Learjet 60 plane crash. Fathers of both the husband and wife confirmed their identities Monday in brief interviews with The Palm Beach Post.

The Post is not disclosing the names, as authorities have not yet notified the families of their deaths.

“It’s quite a blow," said one father, a 70-year-old in Texas. “We had a daughter, her husband and two grandchildren on the plane.”

Social-media accounts for both husband and wife suggest the two were entrepreneurs. One was a potter and the owner of a public relations company. The other was a software founder who posted to his LinkedIn shortly before the crash.

their fate was sealed when they turned north instead of south when they were near the Gulf coast.
Not really. Turning South would have definitely been a better decision, but the path and radar looked like they avoided the primary bad weather then, for some reason (likely they were above the cell that intensified), they turned east right into a small but intense cell. If they would have continued north they could have flown around it.

I’m guessing their on board radar hadn’t yet revealed the intensifying nature of the cell and they lacked the wisdom to anticipate it. That or they incorrectly felt like they were safely above it.

Enough time to evaluate the risk and turn south instead of fly directly into the cell?

Probably

Bluetooth music into my Bose aviation headset isn’t allowed while I’m flying 121 ops fwiw.

A) I'm not on tiktok at all so I haven't a clue what demographic posts there.

B) There is also YouTube and Instagram. I have a few YouTube channels I watch with POV takeoffs and landings, commercial and private jets, none of them 20 something women. I know that goes against the point you're trying desperately to make, but they are out there. This is the modern age, love it or hate it. Practically everyone has a channel.

This is why maritime and aviation disaster threads are the best.

Noted. I'm not sure if you can make an apples to apples comparison with what a surgeon does, though.
