Looks deliberate, but I'm a layman. One of our pilots might be able to tell us if there's a way to make that mistake without intending to.

I say this in almost every thread involving an air accident: loss of situational awareness

US Army 12th Aviation Battalion

quote:

Summary

Known as the Gold Tops (in contrast to the HMX-1 White Tops), the unit provides VIP transportation for the Department of Defense.

Aircraft Type

UH-60 Black Hawk count as of 2021 GAO report: 34
VH-60 Black Hawk

Trackable on Flightradar24 App?

Unknown, but likely no.

Details

Based out of Davison Army Airfield at Fort Belvoir, this unit play a number of other roles, but one of them is also VIP evacuation in the case of emergency. While the HMX-1 squadron would ensure the evacuation of the President and his immediate advisors, it is this squadron that would spirit away other high ranking lawmakers and government leadership.

Obviously you’d know better than me, but I find it hard to believe that the air traffic controller isn’t responsible to ensure that two aircraft aren’t crossing paths too close, especially at night.

Generally what would happen is the tower controller would ask the helo if he had the CRJ in sight. When the pilot says yes the controller instructs the helo to pass behind the jet. The CRJ can’t do much because of the critical stage of flight. I have no idea what went wrong here

Only so much they can do when pilots accept responsibility?

You want ATC to hold every pilots hands? Pilots would hate it

No. They landed near the shoreline.

Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but, based on this flight path data, it looks almost like the helicopter maneuvered itself into a collision course with the airliner.

Blackhawk fricking up seems to be the most logical conclusion at this point, no?

That’s crazy.

Yep, that’s definitely a hazard. In this case, I’m not sure how it could have been avoided by ATC or the CRJ pilots if the reports are accurate and the helicopter dicked up what he was cleared to do. There’s no way to “see and avoid” a helicopter that flies directly in front of your flight path like that, IMO.

FYI, a friend just texted me after listening to the audio & said the helicopter was instructed to pass behind the CRJ.

So he either never had him in sight or saw a different aircraft.

Pretty sure Tuscaloosa has posted photos from the cockpit before.

I’m betting (and we’ll unfortunately never know) that he was looking at the wrong aircraft.

I was going to ask, with all the traffic is it possible he identified the wrong plane.

Apparently the Potomac even in the middle just near the airport is only 11’ deep per local news.
